AI Initiated Alliances?

Hmm, I've been playing for a couple weeks now and I havent seen this happen. Does the AI seek alliances to bolster it's strategy? I've never been approached by the AI with an offer, occassionally they'll give me gifts, but never enough to get our ratings close enough. Also, though I'm not sure it hasn't happen, I haven't noticed the AI allying with each other.

Anyone else's observations? I'm curious abou this.

I believe it dependds on the difficulty level you are playing at the time. The lower the difficulty the more 'stupid' the AI so expect to see things like that amongst others.

I've never had the AI opponents offer me an alliance either--or gifts for that matter, unless I'm completely outpacing them. They do, however, ally with each other. Any time I'm at war with more then one race, they very frequently wind up allies within a turn or two.

Also, I have had races--races I'm not really that close to--inform me from time to time they're "joining me in my fight against _____." This doesn't noticeably improve our relations in any way though (even if I toss them a gift or two as a sign of good faith).

Yes, it does. I once had a very peaceful gigantic galaxy go to all-out war in a single turn thanks to the idiot Torians on the other side of the galaxy declaring war on a minor race deep within my territory that I was conveniently allied with. Which is why I say "ally with a minor race if you want to alleviate your boredom."

The Torians and the Altarians were allies, and I was allied with the minor race (Andians I think) as well as the Terrans, who were allies with the Iconians. It pretty much went to hell in a handbasket in that one turn.
