Ship Designer

I really like the ship designer (like many people must do from some of the excellent screenshots ). I was just thinking, it would be an excellent idea if you could include a ship design in the main menu, where you can design a ship with all the upgrades unlocked (and a option to pick the miniturisaton level you are using).

It would also be good if that included a ship management system, where you could load up all your own ships and all the pre-created ships and be able to delete any custom ships you don't want.

I think this would be alot easier to create ships for the games, for instance, I could design my "Constructor Mk II" (my own upgraded constuctor) in all the different race ship designs quickly and easily and be able to see ALL the ships I have ever created.

If there is something to do that already that would be awesome and you have to point it out to me.

Hear hear. I could probably spend as much time with a fully-unlocked ship designer as with the game itself.

This seems like an appropriate thread for more ship designer ideas, so here goes:

1. Use the keyboard to rotate, zoom, and pan the ship in the designer. Having to keep going to the widget in the corner to do that gets annoying after a while.
2. Exporting the completed ship models to .3ds format or something like that for us geeks to render them in a more professional renderer...
3. Not sure if this is a real problem, and I haven't gone back to see if it really is the case, but it seems that you cannot save more than one ship design with the same name if they are built when playing different races. For example, if I play as human and design a "Fighter Mk1", then play as another race, I cannot create another "Fighter Mk1" without overwriting the other one. Maybe keep each race's designs in their own subdirectory?
4. Button to just clear all non-structural elements (lasers, shields, modules) from the design. I think I saw this suggestion elsewhere, but it seems good enough to repeat...
5. A "Sort by size" button in the parts list.

Dude, you can use the middle mouse button for that stuff. Just hold it down and you can rotate the camera around the ship.

In response to the original thread I completely agree and I would like to see more the comunity behind this idea. Putting the fully unlocked ship designer on the main menu must be done. I was about to start my own thread on this but thankfully I found this thread. This is a brilliant idea. I'm sure people would spend a lot of their time just designing ships... like they already do.

Please, Stardock, consider this option if it's not to difficult to code.
