Getting Registered

If all three birth date fields aren't provided when trying to create an account., the result is a generic error page and request to contact the sysadmin of the site. Form validation that catches this and instructs the user on what's wrong would be more useful.

You're correct. The top priority is catching the error, so at least it's not trying to process the erroneous data.

A more appropriate time to add more descriptive error feedback would probably be when the web team isn't so busy!

In the meantime... were you able to get your account set up successfully? If not, I'd be happy to assist.

The part that answers the question directly:
Sorry I didn't include this: yes, I was able to get registered. It took a few tries before I twigged that all the birthdate fields were required, not just the one right next to the red splat. Sometimes users aren't very bright.

The part that babbles on about the user experience during registration:
It was an especially frustrating experience since I'd just given my money for the download and (right or wrong) was expecting the whole immediate-gratification thing (I spent $5 more than I could have in order to get it NOW). I was turned off already by the number of steps required (my gratification was already not very immediate) and then SOMETHING was broken and I couldn't even tell if it was anything to do with me or not.

I did figure it out and was able to get to the gratification part and actually start playing. Fun so far (< 1 hour), but I'm still trying to figure out where all the knobs are, never mind what happens when I turn them.

It never was clear to me during this whole process how I actually benefit from spending the time going through all the registration stuff. Perhaps it was because I didn't read enough of the words on the page - all I cared about was how to download so I could start playing (a lot of the words looked like marketing smack which I wasn't interested in). This was part of my frustration when I ran into the probelm: my purpose wasn't to read the website but to play the game and my perception was that the website was getting in my way.
