Making a list of text errors in the game

I went through the GalCiv2\MetaverseData\English folder and compiled a list of spelling mistakes.

UPIssues.xml

Misc issues

Monetary values aren't uniformly written. Some are written as "10bc" others as "10 bc".

Spelling mistakes

1. "recieve" should be "receive"

<UPIssue InternalName="UPHeadquarters01">
<Question>As the United Planets Council begins to pass more laws, it has become
necessary to form a center where individuals can go to either voice their opinion
of rulings or pick up documentation on submitting a UP Proposal. The race chosen
will recieve a 50% influence bonus on the planet where the center resides for a 2
year period.</Question>

2. "weathiest" should be "wealthiest"

<UPIssue InternalName="Welfare02">
<Question>This resolution will ask that the [OtherEmpireName], the weathiest
nation in the galaxy, pay 2 percent of their income to be spread equally to all
other civilizations for 3 years.</Question>
<SubQuestion>Is this a fair agreement?</SubQuestion>

3. "crewmembers" should be "crew members"

<UPIssue InternalName="ConstructorSpeed02">
<Question>To keep the innocent crewmembers of Constructor ships safe during times
of unrest, we've decided to vote on permanently upping the minimum speed of the
vessels. Manufacturers will be required to meet our standards, if the decision is
made to change them. What do you feel is an appropriate minimum speed for
Constructors?</Question>

4. "approporiate" should be "appropriate"

<UPIssue InternalName="RestrictModules01">
<Question>With starbases continuously being built throughout the galaxy, it has
become obvious ones that become too strong could completely disrupt the balance of
power. For this reason, it's been suggested that civilizations be forced to
restrict the number of installed modules. Starbases already built will not be
stripped of excess installations, but will not be allowed any more. This law would
stay in effect for 3 years.</Question>
<SubQuestion>What is an approporiate starbase module limit?</SubQuestion>

5. "permanant" should be "permanent"

<UPIssue InternalName="RestrictModules02">
<Question>To permanently limit the power of starbases, we'll be voting on
restricting the number of modules allowed on the structures. Starbases currently
exceeding this limit will not have to scrap their current modules, but no further
installations will be allowed.</Question>
<SubQuestion>What is a reasonable permanant starbase module limit?</SubQuestion>

6. "What percent of monthy income if fair?" Someone was working late..
"What percent of monthly income is fair?"
<UPIssue InternalName="WarFareTax02">

The forums are chewing up my formating.. so here's a cleaner (and much larger) .txt version:

Thank you for pointing these out. They were bugging me a little, but I'm too lazy to document them.

I'm gonna be labelled the "Whiner about whining", but c'mon man... petty, petty, petty!

You've obviously got a lot of free time on your hands if you scanned the whole of the XML content looking for typos! Focus that pent up energy on creating cool new ship types in the ship designer, instead!

I make my living as a Technical Writer, and it doesn't bug me to see a few typos in the game -- I just see 'em and grin a little bit, and move on (Not to mention, my wife tells me I'm the most anal person she's ever met!)

Just have fun, man!

You know, it figures that as long as the first and last letters are in the right places, you won't even notice the spelling errors unless you're specifically looking for them.

Vernholio: Only took about 30mins inbetween games. It was bugging me, and nobody had done it yet.

6. "What percent of monthy income if fair?" Someone was working late..
"What percent of monthly income is fair?"

I would say that correct English would be..."What percentage of monthly income...

Vernholio, If I were one of the devs then I would be very grateful to anyone kindly pointing out these small spelling and gramatical errors. Petty or not, it's good to have things as accurate as can be. How many books have you read that have too many basic spelling mistakes in, simply because they weren't spotted in proofreading.

This post is simply a list of a few errors that EnZee has carefully spent the time to inform the devs about.

what still bugs me is on the planet scream, food production is still m/t a week instead of b/t a weak. Also, when you make a trade route, it says monthy when instead of weekly.

There is a non-spelling error in the description of the Dark Yor... "The galaxy would be better off with them" probably should be "the galaxy would be better off without them" if you read the rest of the description

I don't pay much attention for text in games but even I spoted various typos. Considering that they're extremely easy to fix we just have to point them to get them corrected in future updates.

Warp Drive III description: "to developer" should be "to develop".

Sorry man... wasn't my original intention to bash -- just trying to lighten the mood and take the focus off of the bad, and put it back on the good. I guess I just don't understand why this bugged you so much that you'd spend a half hour to search it all out and then spend the time putting the e-mail together when you could have been playing. Chalk it up to jealousy on my part that you have the free time to do this AND play the game. I wish I did!!

Yeah... they're usually my publications!

Anyway, I just find a lot of this to be pretty ironic. You all want to offer your criticisms about the game to the devs (which I can appreciate), but the problem is, you're not willing to take any criticism yourself, and you get all defensive and lash out. Lastly, please don't use the excuse of "pointing it out to the developers". If that was your true intention, you would just e-mail it directly to them instead of posting it here for everyone to see... "Hey, look at me and what I did!". S'all pretty funny, imho.

Depends on how you think. Speaking as someone who has proof-reading and copyediting among her main skills, I noticed much of this stuff right away myself while playing... I just haven't had the time to do anything about it.

If people are going to post reports about gameplay bugs, what's wrong with posting about typo "bugs" (especially since they're a lot easier to fix)?

Posting it here accomplishes:

1. Showing that somebody already did it (so nobody else who was considering doing it would waste their time duplicating the idea).

2. Letting people chime in with stuff that was missed.

I could understand if (he?) was snotty about it (there's another forum thread where the person posted that they found typos and more or less said "I can't believe they missed all these typos - how sloppy and unprofessional!"), but EnZee just put the info out there with no judgments.

Peace & Luv, Liz

Excellent points, all well noted. I guess I'm being a little bit of a hypocrite, so I apologize. I'm a firm believer in, "If you don't like what's playing on that TV channel/radio station (a la Howard Stern), just turn it off". I guess I need to take that approach with posts and threads here as well.

Also, I should probably be a little more open-minded and not so quick to criticize. No wait a minute... Wasn't that what I was asking others to do in the first place??!!
