Galactic achievements - you snooze, you lose?

If you get beaten to a galactic achievement, do you lose all the social produciton invested in it up to that point , or is it converted into money like Civ4?

I believe that it is lost as you do not get the chance to switch the prodution over it just stops and all money spent on it is lost too.

Thats why you need to pool your resources together when you build a Galactic Achievement
