Fun Idea for ship design

I think a fun idea for a ship design would to be to research entirely the Mass-Driver weapon line up until the point you got Nano-Ripper technology, then to put as many of those as you possibly could on a Cargo Hold. Sure the ship would be very expensive and be destroyed in one hit, but it should be able to take out any other ship in its first strike!

The problem with this is that a fleet would destroy it, and all that moolah is gone You would be better off doing a fleet of 3 small hulled ships, with one ripper each.

Does the kamikaze option actually work?
Can you take out enough units to make building a cargo hull worth it?

It would only work in a 1 vs. 1 scenario, and only if you attack first every time. With a HP value of 1, you are risking alot of investment on a gamble. You only need to make one mistake or unlucky roll and it's all she wrote. Honestly, just throw them on a smaller hull ship and more of them, those HP really make a difference.

No. Because if you're up against more than 1 ship, even if you have a fleet, they'll take out the cargo ship, because it's the best armed. So its killed instantly

this will not work since damage is a roll of 1 to (weapon damage #) Defense is also allowed to roll against. So one ship against a fleet, even if the ship had a very high damage ability, still has the possibility of only doing 1 damage and so your jury rigged cargo ship would perish. You might get lucky, but it really is a waste of money.

In combat more ships is always better and even some defense is better than no defense. You should always protect your medium hulls and higher. The AI on lower levels tends not to do this and instead thinks slapping lots of guns on is a good idea...and so they die like flies. Of course the AI will try to zerg you as well.

Depends on your abilities. In my current game, I took the war party, massive hit point bonuses and massive weapon bonuses. My ships have -no- deffense but my light fighters has twice the hit points of their heavy fighters, at level 0.

HPs tend to ramp up real fast when they gain level. My fighter/heavy fighter fleets are ripping up ships twice their size that are tailored to fighting -my- ships (I use only beams/shields so far, I'm fighting the altarians and they're building ships with shields and railguns) and are coming out with more hit points than they had when they went to fight.

Once again, it depends on how you play
