All planets production went to ZERO!!! WTF?

Did my entire civilization simultaneously discover pot or something?

Because suddenly ALL my planets went to 0 production for everything - military, social, research.

Saving and loading didnt' help. Nor did quitting the game and loading.

Is there something I should be doing?

As belugawhale alluded to: if you're in debt past -500 bc, then your whole economy is forced to do nothing but pay back the loan, which means no production until you're paid up.

Be very careful with your treasury balance. As mentioned above, heavy debt is the most likely cause for the issue you are reporting. Remember that you can adjust your spending and tax rates through the domestic policy button to prevent this kind of disaster.

which can lead to a weird yo-yoing effect as you climb above -500.. spend yourself back below it then climb up again.. repeat ad infinitum

I can't believe people are actually pointing out the -500bc thing.

There's a big, focus-stealing, important unavoidable message about it exactly describing the phenomena and it's cause. I'm struggling to see a scenario where someone didn't read it that doesn't end in 'lazy'.

As an aside, I like that the AI ha the same rule. Looking at the industry graph, you can see the points at which the strain on economies was too much and their production bottomed out. No cheating = good.

Actually a nice trick I discovered in this regard makes it easy to upgrade large numbers of ships FAST, but at the trade off of production. When you have a small amount of cash in the bank do a mass upgrade of a given class - which can quickly rack up into the tens of thousands or more - and the following 2 or 3 turns your entire economy does nothing but pay off the debt. But you produce nothing new and research nothing while you do it. Not bad if you need to up your firepower in a big hury

That's exploiting the fact that debt is capped at -2 trillion credits. Kind of cheap.
