Heart of the Beast

Strategy thoughts and questions

Since I've played a lot of strategy games, mostly RTS, but also MOO2 etc in the contrast. So I was thinking about different offensive strategies for the game and I was wondering what you pros think of this blitz krieg kind of strategy. Striking fast, striking deep, into the heart of the beast.

In MOO2, I used to have this race that could develop a tech very quickly and get few offensive ships that cost a lot, but were superior for some time in the game. This way I could take out 2 or 3 capitals of other races before they caught up. Would this kind of approach work in GCII? Basically the thing is that the first attack would be swift, powerful and targeted at opponents capital. Even if he has a lot of ships, when you penetrate the defences and destroy the capital, you will have done extensive if not unrepairable (well on the short term at least) damage to your opponent, even if he can get it back.

Is it worth it to go on such approach, or would you rather try to grind off the smaller planets, bit-by-bit until you've surrounded your opponent?

On a complitely unrelated note, you pros who have had time and money to test all kinds of different strategies, can you compare hard teching against massive fast production of military? And how to make the production thing work so that you can really do okay with the marginal ships against comp spouting out massive fleets too?

Oh and where do you build freighters ?

if u are going after a influence victory, why not...but u have to hold it...and it's quite difficult (in the higher AI level)
I build my freighers within my capital world
send em in one direction and put a starbase near the planet so it can boost the trade income lol

Hi!
In MOO2, I used to have this race that could develop a tech very quickly and get few offensive ships that cost a lot, but were superior for some time in the game. This way I could take out 2 or 3 capitals of other races before they caught up.

There are IMO four problems with this approach here in GC2:
1) hard to develop so much better ship that would survive many AI's swarms of fighters. Damage here heals slowly;
2) ground combat bonus of some AI is insanely high;
3) you CAN'T force-grow your pop to be used as troops;
4) you can't just bomb planet flat..

This combines in much slower approach to the warfare. Well, if you could put together a really fast and long range ship, with single weapon at the start of the game, you could try to contain an AI by killing its colonizers. With current game settings you can build it, when most planets are already taken.

It depends...

if the heart of the enems empire is not to deep and you have fast transports (min. 10 parsecs/week) and some good and fast fleet it would be a good tactic. I've used this tactic at tough on a medium map against my strongest enemy (he was bigger in influence, economic and military, but i was more technically developed). 4000 m of strong marines with bombardement did their job and his neck was broken...

I was going to ask "how you build freighters" I don't see them in the shiplist.

And my point of capturing the homeworld was to cripple their ... well everything. I guess in GalCiv II, the races aren't depending THAT MUCH on their capital, meaning they can recover without it. Mhm.

The freighter module for ships is available only through the Trade tech. You can skip it, but you won't get the module unless you pick up the basic Trade (check its unlocks).

Sure they can recover. If you use this tactic they will loose one planet, which may be one of there best planets. But there may also be some good backup planets. In galciv 2 a planet cannot grow endlessly. So at a given time there maybe many developed planets. But the homeworld holds the civilization capital which pumps out 24Mp of Industry and research by itself and therefore it often holds some great achievements. So it does hurt the AI and you've got some good start at beating him. Nevertheless there will remain quite some job to do after this..

It's possible to 'rush' the AI. Once I was playing on painful, and my starting position was horrible, so I dumped all my money in research and took the planets from the drengin.

My ship was mostly a gun ductaped to an engine though...

ROFLMAO! Thats how all my ships are!

"All your base are belong to us" Isn't this suppose to be read "All your base now belongs to us" I don't get this statement at all, I think I heard of it in CnC sometime in the long distance past. Where does this phrase come from?

Hmmn yea, nice to hear feedback on this. I've only played the game on normal and after reading that some guys "How to beat difficulty X comp", it became a LOT easier, I just ran over using the strategies told there and they never had a chance.

And the idea about the carving out the heart is also that you can take your opponents by surprise - I don't know how the hard AIs react to fleets running on their places, but normal AI doesn't react so basically, you can get almost free run into their territory if you haven't put up a war with them. With one of their big colonies taken down their power decreases so in few turns, they might agree to take a peace treaty and pay you for it Buut I guess it's nota s easy on harder levels.

Basically I just kept them friendly with eco, sold tech for massive money, destroyed big colony, got them to like me again marginally - and repeat. In the end I won with influential victory (With no doubt that I could've won with military quicker).

The whole process of beating down 5 opponents (+minors) in medium size galaxy cost me 10 ships, of which 4 were transports, at least two or three were constructors. So not much war goin' on All the fleet vs fleets were 2 of my Medium - large vessels taking out like 5 of opponents ships...

I'll up the difficulty and try to get accustomed ^^
