Do you like new ship design upgrade ?

Do you like new ship design policy introduced in latest upgrade that in case you select "upgrade" removes all the "items" from she ship except hulls and visuals ?

Well I started this thread because personally I DO NOT like it.
It is an improvment over buggy "Remove" button but it's not good either.

The reasons "why" is simple :

- Some "things" removed are also act as visuals (engines, weapons,..) and after autoremoving them its demn hard to place them back especially if you have a lot of "visuals" details around.

- It's a bit hard to keep track on what was before , before hitting "upgrade" now I have to remember or/and write down what I had before.

So I think this solution is NOT GOOD. It is acceptable as a temporal solution if permanent one require a lot of time from developers but it's not good one to keep !
I believe developers here thinked more about people designing nice looking ship then on gamers.

Now about what thigs I think we need in ship designer module :

1. Behavior simular as it was before the .x010 patch but with WORKING normaly "remove" button.

2. Clicking on component installed should open on the relevant "tab" on left (like clicking on "Laser V" installed thould open weapons etc...

3. Pressing on "Clear" button should ask if you want to remove everything or left the hule/visuals.

4. "Create ship from Template" should be added where it should start ship designer with some ship preloaded including base design.

5. Have 2 "sliders" one with ship "visuals" and another with "working parts" - this will make things easier for everyone.

This would sitisfy me and most of the GAMERS, not just people that love only create grat looking ships, I think.

Any comments ?

As previously stated i would like to see a scroll function added to the ship design window. placing items on a long ship is pretty much hit-and-miss at the moment because the rotation function takes the end off the page. A scrolling function would be great as you could scroll to the area and then zoom if required.

I've been having a lot of fun with the long ships as well... will post some pics later if my computer ever recovers from Alt-Tab

Yes, don't yell

On a more serious note, I do agree with you, upgrading should upgrade to newer versions of current components not replace them completely different ones.

I liked the previous upgrade system much better, I'm just updgrading some waepons or engines and it is much more uncomfortable the way it works now.

But i must admit i feel a bit sorry for stardock. They've just changed the system because of complaints only to earn new complaints from others. So if others are happy, i can live with it.

Have to agree with you but I think it was a quick solution to fix ugly "remove" button bug, now we should "press" for more permanent one

, you are right as well I am a bit abused the font size but when I posted first time with normal size it was look unreadably boring while I believe VERY importent , so I added a size a bit , probably a bit too
much

Excuse my ignorance,

but what was the 'ugly remove button bug' ?

I never ran into problems upgrading my ships pre 1.0x0.10.

I love the new system! Way much better than the old one. And yes Iam gamer but also little bit of ship designer junkie.

Iam sure it can improved still, but the only things i miss at the MOMENT is the little kinda downwards black arrow in the corner of the upgrade button. You know the kinda all windows buttons tend to have, which reveal sub options.

You could then push the Upgrade button and wipe the design clean of space hogging components and with the sub options you could do example only wipe the engines or weapons with upgrade weapons or upgrade engines sub choices.

What do you think?

I think removing all non-pretty objets should be an option *after* you press upgrade.

That is, you press upgrade and ship is as was before, but you can select "Remove ship parts" (or something better) to remove all the parts that do anything. That way people who only want to change small aspects of the ship can do so.

Very simple , you could not remove more then one "thing" defore adding the other when updating.
So if you let's say wanted to update 4 "Laser III" to 4 "Laser V" you had to " remove 1 "Laser III" , add one "Laser V" , remove 1 "Laser II" add one "Laser V" ....
If you tried to remove 2 "Laser III" in the row it did not worked - even first removed laser "returned".

Strange, never sawn that...

Back to topic, I second the solution of SmackleFunky: Make a button to remove all non jewelry parts in the shipdesigner itself. That would satisfy all players.

I don't agree, what if I'm upgrading from lasers5 to plasma2, because lasers are smaller for less damage, and plasmas are larger for more damage, so 5 lasers are dmg, 3 plasmas are 6dmg; but because of size, you can't realy fit 5 plasmas on the same ship!

I am too against "auto upgrading" the weapons but this still means I DO want to be able to CHANGE them manually , not to fit everything from the beginning each time.

that's why I think the new system is a little bit better than the old one....but far for being perfect though...

Wait and see

You know something we don't ?
I mean I love the way developers listen to users but to "listen" someone have to talk, that's why I started this thread to begin with.

People that make forums posts with obnoxiously large text should be beaten about the neck and crotch region with cactus fronds.

That being said...is the new functionality perfect? Of course not. Things can always be better. There are tons of things you could do to add functionality and ease of use to the ship designer, if you though in the long run, it would be worth the effort at the expense of actual additional playable content.

Weighed against the the way it was though, the flaws in this approach are far less annoying that having to scroll through dozens of "bling" components to find the one functional component you havre to manually remove and replace. So much easaier to just run through and put the functional parts on again.

SmackleFunky , this probably was directed to me ,I did made font a bit bigger then should in original post

Bingjack, you right about problems for "visual designers" , but you should think about "just gamers" too, after all it's not 3D Max it's a game, that's why I added ite (5) in original post, I think it would satisfy everyone.

I like the new function, actually.

I like it too *sometimes* I just hate loosing old functionality

Yeah, I agree. I have found myself now writing down on paper the stats of ny ships before clicking on the upgrade button versus before the "improvement" I only needed to remove the objects I wanted to upgrade. Not exactly a good step forward.

Frogboy already posted in another similar thread that they are working to fix it and that currently.. it's just a temporary fix to annoy the least amount of people.

I love the new upgrade function. But I also liked the old way.

What we need is an 'Edit' button right next to the 'Upgrade' button.

And what was annoying about the old system, besides the bug with the remove button? (You didn't actually have to place another component, just select one from the list.) Difficulty of finding the components you want to replace on this list of components on the ship is the only thing I can think of. It seems to me the best way to fix that would be to have a separate list of functional components and decorative components. Or, if changing the look of the screen is too much of a problem at this point, just sort the list so that functional components always come first when you load in the ship design. (Sort components by size?) Problem solved; now they're easy to find and remove.

That's what I am saing from the start.

I agree completely with this suggestion. Drives me crazy trying to get everything back in the same place, size and angles as before.
