gifted ships where never used

I gave the Scottilings a few ships when they came to me asking for hand outs when they were attacked by another race. The ships I gave them were stationed on a few of my planets. Once I handed them over all they did was change tags and eject from my planets, then stayed there next to my planets the whole game. Even when I reloaded.

I don't know if this is a bug or not, but it was disappointing since the Scottlings were my one and only trading parter at the time, I had to physically declare war on the Arceans to save the Scottlings since they didn't use my ships.

I kept a few saves from the game, most included the gifted ships just sitting there.

I had the same experience, with the Dark Yor. They were losing to the Dregin so I gave them about a dozen large ships which I had parked near their world. They never even moved them once. The Dregin just ignored them and continued to attack their planet, even though the ships were within a few squares of the Dark Yor planet. In the end the Dark Yor were conquered without ever moving the ships I gave them.

I tried to setup the Snathi against the Arceans to no avail. I gave them the most powerful ship of the galaxy and they didn't used it.

MGagne and Skillet -- were the races you gave ships to minor ones? I haven't seen this problem, but I've never given ships to minor races. All the posts here, though, have been dealing with the minors. Maybe there's something in the code that keeps them from expanding that also keeps them from using gifted ships.

Based on my experience, the ai begin to use the traded ships only one or two turns later.
I don't know why, but it happens even in Galciv 1.

Same experience with minor races here.

Stardock, is it possible to get the minor races to be smarter and perhaps colonize like they did in GalCiv1? I can understand that they don't go about conquering, but so far on Normal mode, they have only stayed on their home world waiting to get conquered without even defending too much. Minor races shouldn't be useless meaningless races. I remember in many GalCiv1 games where a minor races or two became a major power, both militarily and trade wise. Although they didn't go about invading planets, nobody dared to invade them because they were strong.

Any help making the minor race AI a bit smarter (or info on how to mod them a bit smarter) would be appreciated.

Interesting. Sounds like even though they're flagged as the AI's in the GUI, it seems like they're either a) not added to the list of ships and thus ignored, or b) an internal flag still marks the ship as yours.

Try loading a game and declaring war on the Drengin and see if they attack those gift ships. Personally, I never give ships away when they can be turned against me (I rarely design anti-ships to what I have made).

I dont know about not invading planets. I was playing today and had a race called the Jesuits, or something like that, declare war on me. Im still relativly new to the game, so i went to the foreign afairs window thinking they were one of the main races, and i couldnt find them. They had about 6 planets as it was. Im going to go back and load that game, check to see if they were a minor race. Must have been.

Edit.. i just loaded the game and checked. It was the Jessuins. They had 10 planets that they had conqured. Thats more then any other race had, including the leading one. So much for being a minor race!!

SOMEtimes the minor AI will be agressive and go conquer people. Sometimes they are really good at defending themselves. Most of the time they are just there to act as a source of trade, influence, and fodder.

Carinoids are the most interesting as they will usually steal ALL the tech one of the other players has at some point and offer it for planets. Snathi supposedly can be dangerous from time to time. Dark Yor...not sure, I hear they too can be agressive...the rest are just fodder.

I have noticed this. I gifted ships to a friendly race who was attacking a bigger race. He kept them around my planet the whole time, and didn't make as much of an effort as he could have to aid his war effort, which lasted almost the whole game.
