Ships from the forum

Check these out!

It's hard to believe now that there was an internal debate about adding the ship design feature in which players could customize how their ships looked by adding 0-sized "extras".  Ship design has become almost a game unto itself. Check out some of the starship designs from this thread. These are in-game ships designed by players.

I'm too busy playing the game to make these supposedly 'uber ships'

No, seriously though. These are great looking, and I'm really impressed.

Wow, this is AMAZING. Some of you are just either ridiculously talented or have obscene amounts of free time on your hands. Superb stuff

There was an internal debate about that? Wow. All the naysayers should be pantsed and tied up in front of the office.

Schwaaa...I spend far more time on the creator than I do in the actual game

Thanks for throwing mine up there Frogboy...especially since I can't manage simple forum coding to actually show the pictures

Honestly though, it's as if you took the basic/simple customization of AC (one of my favorite 4X games), then added REAL customization...and then made it apply to space ships. I'd marry you guys...but I'm too busy playing with the hulls

can we use ships that other people design? if so, anyone interested in designing a battlestar galactica/pegasus? =p

what I do is start a Battle of the Gods scenario. (all tech available)

Then I choose the hull type I want to work on when setting up the game.

Then when the game starts I go to the shipbuilder and start with the smallest hull first.

I proceed to create a "core" ship design without any weapons, defence or modules.

I then save my ship designs with the title CF Fighter, Heavy Fighter, Corvette etc... (cf is for core frame).

I quit that game then start up a normal game. I now have all my core frames available to me to use as the hulls become available. I can then choose upgrade on a core frame design of mine and place whatever modules are appropriate at the time. I then save the new design under a different name.

This method is great so that you don't spend to much time in the editor when playing a "real" game. You have your cool designs already pre-made and ready to accept what ever gear you slap on them. Just be sure never to save over your core frame designs.

Future feature request: May we have a users "core" ship section in the ship builder? unless this can already be done.

Both. Though I'd prefer to be thought of as "ridiculously talented".

Thanks for posting my battleship, Mr. Wardell.

Frogboy, I hope you weren't one of the naysayers. If you were, well... do frogs wear pants? haha

But I'm glad the ship design made it into the game. For some reason, there's a tremendous amount of satisfaction when you build something that looks cool and then make it tromp your pathetic enemies. I just consider it another part of the game. While I normally save empty hulls for future ship configurations, I rarely re-use them in new games. Part of the fun for me is deciding on a design principle for a particular game and sticking with it. My next batch of ships is going to be entirely asymmetrical. Can't wait.

Some of those are simply amazing! The big robot one blows me away, but my favorite is the ship that looks like a bird.

Thanks for recognizing some of my designs Frogboy! I'm flattered to have some displayed with these other great designs.

How do you take a screen shot ? Don't see it in the manual or in game info. Thanks

The amount of effort that must have gone into that robot design is amazing. The most creative thing I've ever done with a ship design is put a "wing" on the top of the ship and call it "The Shark". The thing I don't like about ship design is that you have to either do it, or accept the fact that most of your ships will look pretty much the same. I like octaviusviii's idea for "CF" ships, though. Put a bunch of those in the Library, and that problem's solved.

I have to admit that when the beta did not have "stock" designs, my first concern was that we would have to design every ship ourselves.

As it turns out the ship designing is pure joy and I never use a stock design other than the occasional defender early on.

I can actually see myself continuing to play around with design after my interest in the gameplay has subsided

Wow.
Just Wow.

Dang those are some pretty cool looking ships. I have yet to actually sit down and create a ship. I usually just slap on some wings and fins and call it good.

alt-printscreens, isn't working for me. Unless I just can't find where they're getting stored. Are you sure that's how to take a snapshot ?
