I won't tell you, but try adding even more question marks to your question. Only then will I think you are cool enough to be told the answer.

Hahaha. BUt seriously, give him a break, it's a legitimate question. I actually don't know the answer, either.

Decoration. And a little bit of terrain to surround the important (ie, inhabited) planets.

I'm flabbergasted that there are so many posts complaining about the useless worlds, while nobody -- NOBODY -- has complained that you can't colonize all of those stars you see in the background, and that you can't fly into that nebula, and that you can't use all 72 tiles of every single planet if you get enough tech.

Honestly, the map wouldn't look as cool if each star had either zero planets or only one or two inhabitable ones and nothing else. 5 planet star systems look cool, but it'd be crazy gameplay to have all 5 inhabitable every game.

Play with the startup sliders to maximize the inhabitable worlds, and appreciate the rare gem of decoration you are left over with.

If only habitable planet were shown, the AI would gun straight for them, they start with the star tech. While you would be bumping into planetless stars, the AI would colonize everything. Be thankful they are there.

1. Pizzazz

2. Authenticity

3. Gameplay requires it (Tototot's post)

4. If you make good use of 'em, they can be life-saving obstacles if you're trying to out-maneuver the enemy.

I don't see how it's so tough to suspend disbelief about uninhabitable planets (when it's not even far-fetched) when not a single person has a problem with ships being able to travel only on one plane.

Surely, the AI would know where the habitable planets are!!! The unuseable Class 0 planets are purely for decoration I believe. In any case. it would probably be best if they (the empty circle icons) are removed form the tactical 2D map view, since they're absolutely useless and contribute only to cluster. Leave them in the 3D view for scenery sake.

Would be better if "ship tactics" like in Stars! are implemented instead, so defenseless transport have a chance to escape when encountering pesky fighters and being peppered to death.

There are also some events that turn uncolonizable planets into colonizable ones later. (I had one that made every planet within two sectors of a particular planet a class 15! Needless to say, I started buying colony ships with every planet I had.)

Three ways to look at that problem:

A. Cargo hulls are ment to die after 1HP of damage.

B. Fleets will protect them first

C. Consider using large hulls, Advanced modules and some weaponary. MIniturization works well too
