Do you usually build 'Battle Stations' for your Resource Starbases?

Or do you just use fleets to defend them?

Personally, I have perfected a tactic whereby I just load 'em up with mining improvements, forget that the AI tends to target them, and then sulk and mutter about 'ungentlemanly conduct' when I start a war and the enemy blows them all up.

ROFL. I HATE when I forget to upgrade a base all the way, and it gets stomped by a single dang fast fighter.
Matt: Unless you have enough ships to completely surround your base, you'll find the AI is very good at slipping by your front lines and toasting your starbases if they don't have any kind of offense/defense.

That depends were they are, if they are deep in my empire safe from the borders I tend to just min them. If they are on the borders then I do. If you reserch the starbace defence techs you can create a starbase that can take out almost anything the bad guys through at it. Or at least delay them untill reinforcments can get there.

I usually build one battle station and if there are no immediate needs to start another base, I throw in some defense mods based on what the AI is currently using (I find there's rarely any variation in what the AI uses as its staple weapons... not complaining - makes it easier for me to exploit their weaknesses).

I usually postion a small fleet (usually with obsolete ships) on top of the mining starbases for protection, if the starbase is far away from my main planets however and it's difficult to defend I turn them into porcupines with weapons upgrades.

I always try to add a few weapons. They're cheap and prevent having a single fast fighter take out a fully loaded mining facility. If you add the higher level weapons, the AI will spend tons of ships to destroy it, for a net gain.

I put as many guns on em as they can hold, then protect them with a bunch of ships. Generally, no one messes with my starbases. Really, consider them as an investment that you want to protect from every wannabe punk who comes around with a gat and an attitude.
