Technology trading.

Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new to Galactic Civilisation II's style of gameplay and would be very grateful if one of you more experienced guys (or girls) could answer a quick question for me. (By the way, the game ROCKS).

What I wanted to know is that during trading with another civilisation what happens if I try to gain a technology from them but haven't previously researched the prerequisite technologies leading up to it?

Many thanks.

You get the tech, but you still have to research the pre-requisites if you wish to advance beyond the tech that you just traded for.

Lets say for the sake of argument you ask for a good weapons tech like Plamsa weapons and you get it. Previously your people didnt even know more than beam weapon theory (not even a laser I ). You can build plasma weapons and put them on ships from now on but you don't have access to lasers. You can research Plasma II if you wanted to, going back and figuring out lasers is also possible (not sure why you'd want to but it is possible).

Maybe this example will answer your question

You have instant access to the technologies unlocked ONLY in that tech. You can use whatever it unlocks right away and is considered fully researched.

There is only one caveat here that I found when I first started playing - some techs are absolutely useless without their prerequisite. For example, if you purchase/trade Plasma Weapons off of someone without ever having put a point into beam weapon technology, then you're by no means at a loss. You can research further from that point on. However (and this is where you have to be careful), nabbing Advanced Trade, while a good thing, without having Trade won't do you much good other than having Trade research faster. The reason for this is that you still need your basic Trade tech to unlock the freighter module. Otherwise, you get no immediate benefits from skipping a tech like that. Just have a good look around the tech forest and see if you miss out on something by skipping a tech (or four, five...whatever).

Going back and researching older techs can still be useful, especially in the Diplomacy and Cultural Domination trees, since each individual tech gives you a bonus.

False! In fact the AI will complain if you bundle together old and new techs in a trade.

Make use of the tech you gained but always go back and get the pre reqs.

You get that tech. And the (often useless) prerequisites stay in your trading/research list, annoying you with their uselessness.

Hello again,

Thank you very much for replying to this so quickly. I just wasn't sure what the mechanics of technology trading were.

I suppose if I had playe a few more games I probably would have gotten the answer myself. (Lazy b*****d)!

Anyway, thank you again and happy gaming!!
