Frogboy's Quote about the second patch.

This following is a quote from FrogBoy about the second patch.

"Hopefully players of the game can attest that generally speaking, the game's pretty solid" - Frogboy

So players, what is your opinion on the game? Is it solid with regard to bugs or not?

Galciv 2 is an awesome game, but personally I think there is way too many 'minor' issues to call is solid.

Just chiming in to say: no bugs here. Been running the game on my homegrown PC since release day without any CTDs or serious errors. A few quirks, but nothing that can't be worked around.

also, I tried installing the game on my laptop this weekend. When I went to run the game, I got the notification that my video drivers were out of date, and then the game crashed.
I wasn't able to update the drivers because the drivers from the ATI site didn't work on my computer. So then i checked the forums here and found a link in one thread to a place where I could download drivers that would work... and, sure enough, they did. The game now runs fine (albeit a little choppy) on my old, piece of crap laptop.

So, yeah, I'd say the game's pretty solid.
i'd also say I find it kind of ironic that I had an easier time finding the right drivers for my computer here than on the homepage of the company that actually made my video card.

I wasn't able to update the drivers because the drivers from the ATI site didn't work on my computer. I probably spent an hour looking at the ATI site, and looking at the computer manufacturer's site... and then spend another hour in online chat with tech support trying to find the drivers. No luck.

Don't get me started on EVE online. I wanted to play that mess but it was impossible. I never saw a game as buggy as that one.

Why don't you try reformating the PC? Nine of ten times it is Windows fault to be unable to handle your apps and games. Besides it eliminates all the junk that PCs get over time.

No issues. I've seen a few quirks, but nothing really major. Besides, I've seen Stardocks support for GC1 in the past, I'm confident any issues that do exist will be ironed out (and then some) in the future.

I'll chime in and say no CTDs or bugs here. I had a few nasty random event caused CTDs during the 1.0x beta, but the final fixed it right up. Good work guys.

Reapy, have you considered that your hardware might be the problem? Oftentimes even a subtle variation in the manufacturing can cause issues. My Mom's computer and mine are almost exactly alike, yet mine has problems hers doesn't. And I'm certainly not upgrading this, I'll replace it completely when I get the money.

I had one CTD last week after the Stardock update. Another thread talked about the memory-resident component (MCP?) and how to disable it. Since I didn't have any crashes before the update, I went ahead and disabled this feature. I haven't had any crashes to desktop since.

In game, there are a few quirky things (mostly with planetary invasions), but really, for me, the game runs and is enjoyable. Though, I do look forward to future patches and game-play tweaks (like unspent social spending going into improving approval rating! Yay!).

Frogboy: Dude, you need to calm down! If every time a customer loses his patience (because computers have this magical ability of making people really mad) and says the game is buggy you ask him to return the game, SD will go bankrupt soon. Thankfully I changed my mind when you suggested that to me and now I'm enjoying the game.

I'm not sure what makes you think I wasn't being calm.

What I'm saying is that some people will likely have a basic incompatibility with the game for reasons we don't know.  Those people paid good money for the game and should return it if they can't get it resolved.

For example, when we shipped The Political Machine a couple years back, it would not run on most of the then available Intel graphics adapters because the game required True Type Fonts.  There was nothing we could do.  Those users simply couldn't play the game.

The only positive side was that in that case, we figured out the issue. But it took a solid month before we discovered this and by that time, many players couldn't return it anymore.

Who is to say that there isn't some basic issue like that. Something we simply don't know about and may not know about for months?

The thing about 1.0X is that at that pont, we've done pretty much everything that can be done that's within our control.  Random, regular CTDs at that point indicate there's some basic incompatibility that isn't likely to get resolved any time soon if ever.

Dear Frogboy,

Your game is awesome. There are some quirks in the game. I am a programmer and a perfectionist and these quirks 'bug' me, and therefore, I could not bring myself to say that it's 'solid', but your game is awesome. Interestingly some of stardock's customers are as passionate about your game as you are and we want it to be perfect, a masterpiece. Please do your best, as you have been, to nail down these quirks.

P.S. Did I mention that your game is awesome?

I wonder, have any of the people who have crashes updated their DirectX lately (in addition to their hardware drivers, of course)? Microsoft has come out with something like 6 updates to DirectX 9.0c without changing the "c" designator. Just because someone has 9.0c doesn't mean they have the latest version of DirectX.

I would say the game is solid as far as crashes go. I think it is a bit more than my computer can handle, and I probably wont go much larger than a normal map. But if my 3 year old system can handle it, then I would immagine any newer one whould have a fair go at it.

That being said, I agree with the polishing aspect. The game is great, but there are little things that are very confusing. Most things may be intentianal, but it is impossible to tell without a more in deapth manual. Here are some examples of anoying things I have had to deal with.

1. After loading a game, the diplomacy screan came up with a civ that had been destroyed. I didn't talk to it, and it dissapeared after I communicated with one still living, but it did happen.

2. I have noticed that sometimes when forming or disbanding a fleet, I get bonus moves.

3. After loading a game, I had fleets with 4-0 movement status.

4. Why is it that when I place a weapon on a tiny ship, it takes one less space. For example, a size 5 laser on takes up 4 spaces. If this is supposed to be this way, why not just make tiny hulls bigger?

5. I have noticed that when I have a fleet with a damaged ship attack a lone target (no animated battle), the damaged ship will regain 2 hit points after battle.

6. I too have had huge frustration with componets re appearing when I try to upgrade.

7. Also, while upgrading, I can get componets on the bar that don't exist on the ship and can't be removed.

8. I again wish we could have a more in deapth manual so all these "bugs" can be explained away if they are not indeed bugs.

With regard to crashes....

Try downgrading your drivers. Sometimes when I go a couple of releases back it fixes many problems. This worked for me with Civ4 and Total War.

Plus, as we all know, sometimes your card could be heat damaged without you really knowing it. I remember this happened to me as well. Just had to wait until I could afford to buy a new one. Then I machined some slots into my case and put a bunch of fans to help cool the new card. it seemed to work.
