GalCiv II: KNOWN issue list

READ THIS IF YOU ARE HAVING A SERIOUS PROBLEM

We don't like getting yelled at by customers who run into some problem any more than you like running into problems.  And we especially get no joy out of people making forum posts that ignore the stickies proclaiming the game is buggy.  Let me put it like this, if the game crashes on you, we consider that unacceptable.  But you can be certain that the game shipped with plenty of testing to make sure it doesn't crash. We've only encountered two crash bugs since release that were due to bugs in our code, the rest have been old drivers, bad drivers, etc. (and people wonder why developers like consoles).

So below is a list of things we've compiled that cause people problems and how to work around them.

Whenever you have some problem, you should look at your debug.err which is created in the game's directory.  This will tell you a lot about your system.  I'm going to put this vaguely in the order of what causes a problem.

#1 Game crashes immediately.

Happens to approximately 2.5% of users.

Most common cause: Running your desktop at below 1024x768 or running your desktop in 16-bit color.  This resolves 99% of users.

#2 Game crashes randomly while playing!

Happens to approximately 2.5% of users.

Most common cause: People with older video drivers. We weren't kidding, you MUST HAVE A RECENT (past year) set of video drivers. If you don't, the game will crash randomly. The readme says this. The stickies say this. We're not kidding around here. You must update your video drivers. Ignoring all that and running into the forum and saying "How could they ship this piece of #$@#!" is not going to update your video driver. You must update the video driver.

Ex: If you're running the nvidia 81.95 drivers, update them to 81.98 or better.

You also absolutely must be running at 1024x768 or higher. That means both X and Y must be equal to or greater than those two numbers.

Next most common cause: People who have eliminated their page file or have a very small page file.  That's your virtual memory.  Check the debug.err and near the top it will say how much virtual memory you have allocated. If it's less than a gig (heck, nowadays you should have at least 2 gigs for virtual memory) then there's your problem.

Next most common cause: Overheating. The game's 3D engine has no polygon count, no texture limit. It's designed so that even 2 years from now, you can with mods plug in advanced textures. Some modders have already put in ships from popular sci-fi movies that have over a million polygons and it works.  But it comes at a cost: Your video cards are fully utilized. And that can translate to heat.  This mostly affects people who have built their own machines and thrown in a powerful video card.  Version 1.0X (and later) support GPU throttling which should solve this.

Next most common cause: People with AMD64 Dual Core who haven't updated their chipset drivers. GO here, get your drivers, play game, have fun.

#3 Game crashes when I save a ship design.

THIS one is our bug.  Cause: If the player selects a planet from the GNN dialog, clicks on the star port, clicks on the shipyard, builds ship, it will die in 1.0.  Basically the Z-order of the windows gets confused.  Obviously, nobody in the beta/gamma/RCs ever tried to build a ship this indirectly (we just clicked on the shipyard icon).  It was fixed essentially immediately.  You'll need to download the update or not go to the shipyard via all those dialogs.

#4 Game crashes when I invade a planet once in a great while when playing as a custom race.

THIS is also our bug. It only occurs when you play as non-human and only once in a very great while. Fixed in 1.0X. Though at this point, we're talking cases that can be counted on one hand.

#5 You lose your mouse pointer

People with nVidia Geforce 6X series cards (for the most part) have reported this. We have yet to get it in our internal lab and it doesn't seem to be that wide spread but it's a real show stopper.  The solution is to use the hardware mouse cursor which is in the video options area of the game.

OTHER TIPS:

Read the stickies! Post your debug.err.  Or at the very least tell us what kind of computer you have (though debug.err will tell us all about your computer).

#3 is still not entirely fixed. I will post debug next time it occurs.

Video Drivers ....

Well in my case I can only take what my vendor Dell supplies me, and they very rarely update Video drivers.

Hi. I have a problem with GalCiv2 which I have recently purchased here in the UK. I've recently had my interest in PC games rekindled by some great titles released in the last few months and am fond of these turn based games. I bought GalCiv2 after hearing much about it on the net.

Alas this is where my problems start, as at seemingly random intervals during gameplay it hangs up on me forcing a reset. I haven't encountered this problem whilst playing games I have also bought recently. These include F.E.A.R. and Civilistation IV. Its frustrating and I'm not sure what to do, but I have to make it known. I have done the obvious things like update video card driver and turn off background programs (firewall, virus checker etc). Yet it can be no more than 10 mins in (but not explicitly) and I'm forced to reset. This is my system... can't see why any problems should be occuring. Is anyone else having a problem? I hope this helps try to solve the issue. The game seem pretty good, its a shame.

Note... I've also tried turning the fan up on graphics card, which I don't believe is running hot. It's very frustrating. I will post debug if suggested

Version 1.0X.010, released late today (March 6), has removed the ability to edit an existing ship design. When you update a design, the new designe must start from scratch.

Don't bother getting drivers from Dell. Find out what motherboard and video chipset (assuming you're using onboard video) is in your Dell and go to the motherboard manufacturer's website. Dell doesn't always add OEM drivers to their downloads page as they are released. I used to have a Dell and found this out myself.

I have the mouse issue on a 5950. Didn't happen for the first week with the release download. Happens fairly quickly if I forget to enable the hardware cursor. Let me know if you need more info.

I have the cursor issue with the Nvidida 7800 as well...
Also named save games quit working once the huge map got into mid late game, but quick save works.
If I try loading a named save game it crashed to desktop, I even tried sending the error report to microsoft when the send dont send button pops up.... Dont laugh I have actually had that work once. They automaticaly downloaded a fix that worked.

Couple the pointer failing and only being able to overwrite my quick save game is d.o.w. dead in the water

Of course I can start a new game but thats kind of not the point. I was winning : )-

These problems only showed up in mid to late game huge map..... I played this map for 3 days before any sign of trouble.

Processor and Graphics chip temps were fine acording to onboard temp indicators.

Technician, you can install the latest drivers straight from Nvidia's site and it will work fine. You don't need the Dell branded drivers.

Ive got the cursor problem too.
and it pops up at REALLY annoying times.

Switching to HW cursor did not help.

Now for some more info, I'm useing three monitors on a 6800x2 SLI rig, mye "game screen is a CRT, and when I get the "lost cursor" bug it ONLY applies to that screen running the game, The other two windows have the cursor.

I'm Using Windows XP PRO.AMD X2 +3800,2GB RAM

Also only way of removing said bug is to restart the machine, Log off don't work tweak the screens don't work.

Everything runs fine for my computer, except the fact that ships doesn't have all the cool details like they do in screenshot, they all look like bunch of lego blocks put together. When I had finished installing there was a message that my driver was too old, even though it is compatible with directX 9.0c and has memory of 128.... it's GeForce 4000, I think, not sure.

Again, game plays alright, except that graphics department with ships. Just like to know if there is something I can do except buying a new videocard.

Latest Version 1.0X

- Crash when Saving Ship Design
===========================
This seems to be a problem with the "name giving system" of the ships. The crash seems to happen if saving under the same ship name as an old ship (which might even not be displayed in the Shipyard); e.g. from an older game.

Little workaround for this is to delete the Player's Ship Folder in
"c:\documents and settings\

Hi, just downloaded and installed the game. Worked fine the first time, but when i changed the resolution from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 and restarted, it crashes when i try to enter the game. I've upgraded my graphics drivers, too.
Heres my debugg.err:

Version 1.0X.010, released late today (March 6), has removed the ability to edit an existing ship design. When you update a design, the new designe must start from scratch.

Not for me. I updated several ships today after the new patch

Hey I just installed the game and I'm getting a pretty serious error. Everytime I try a and start up a new game or a campaign mission the game starts to load the information but then it just restarts my computer. Not sure if anyone else is getting this problem. Here's my debug.err

The game is not SLI compatible. As far as I can tell, I have the latest drivers for my Nvidia 7800 GTX SLI. This, unfortunately, is not the only game that is non-SLI compatible. What happens is when I start the game, at any random point, the entire computer freezes, and I'm forced to hold the power button for five seconds to shut it down. However, I can switch from SLI to single-gpu from the ASUS AI selectore, and therefore play the game. Just wanted to let you know that the game doesn't support SLI.

Unforuntaely SLI has been implemented very poorly, if they got it right their would be suck problems.

Just to add a 'me too'

Can't save a ship as the same name as another ship, even if you restart the campaign/game. Seems to hold onto the references.

The starting cinematic runs very smoothly but when i get to the menu screen it flashes for half a second and then i get an error message.

I have the same problem with updating ships. Most annoying. It keeps the zero space items, but deletes everything else.
