GalCiv II: KNOWN issue list

GalCiv II: KNOWN issue list

READ THIS IF YOU ARE HAVING A SERIOUS PROBLEM

We don't like getting yelled at by customers who run into some problem any more than you like running into problems.  And we especially get no joy out of people making forum posts that ignore the stickies proclaiming the game is buggy.  Let me put it like this, if the game crashes on you, we consider that unacceptable.  But you can be certain that the game shipped with plenty of testing to make sure it doesn't crash. We've only encountered two crash bugs since release that were due to bugs in our code, the rest have been old drivers, bad drivers, etc. (and people wonder why developers like consoles).

So below is a list of things we've compiled that cause people problems and how to work around them.

Whenever you have some problem, you should look at your debug.err which is created in the game's directory.  This will tell you a lot about your system.  I'm going to put this vaguely in the order of what causes a problem.

#1 Game crashes immediately.

Happens to approximately 2.5% of users.

Most common cause: Running your desktop at below 1024x768 or running your desktop in 16-bit color.  This resolves 99% of users.

#2 Game crashes randomly while playing!

Happens to approximately 2.5% of users.

Most common cause: People with older video drivers. We weren't kidding, you MUST HAVE A RECENT (past year) set of video drivers. If you don't, the game will crash randomly. The readme says this. The stickies say this. We're not kidding around here. You must update your video drivers. Ignoring all that and running into the forum and saying "How could they ship this piece of #$@#!" is not going to update your video driver. You must update the video driver.

Ex: If you're running the nvidia 81.95 drivers, update them to 81.98 or better.

You also absolutely must be running at 1024x768 or higher. That means both X and Y must be equal to or greater than those two numbers.

Next most common cause: People who have eliminated their page file or have a very small page file.  That's your virtual memory.  Check the debug.err and near the top it will say how much virtual memory you have allocated. If it's less than a gig (heck, nowadays you should have at least 2 gigs for virtual memory) then there's your problem.

Next most common cause: Overheating. The game's 3D engine has no polygon count, no texture limit. It's designed so that even 2 years from now, you can with mods plug in advanced textures. Some modders have already put in ships from popular sci-fi movies that have over a million polygons and it works.  But it comes at a cost: Your video cards are fully utilized. And that can translate to heat.  This mostly affects people who have built their own machines and thrown in a powerful video card.  Version 1.0X (and later) support GPU throttling which should solve this.

Next most common cause: People with AMD64 Dual Core who haven't updated their chipset drivers. GO here, get your drivers, play game, have fun.

#3 Game crashes when I save a ship design.

THIS one is our bug.  Cause: If the player selects a planet from the GNN dialog, clicks on the star port, clicks on the shipyard, builds ship, it will die in 1.0.  Basically the Z-order of the windows gets confused.  Obviously, nobody in the beta/gamma/RCs ever tried to build a ship this indirectly (we just clicked on the shipyard icon).  It was fixed essentially immediately.  You'll need to download the update or not go to the shipyard via all those dialogs.

#4 Game crashes when I invade a planet once in a great while when playing as a custom race.

THIS is also our bug. It only occurs when you play as non-human and only once in a very great while. Fixed in 1.0X. Though at this point, we're talking cases that can be counted on one hand.

#5 You lose your mouse pointer

People with nVidia Geforce 6X series cards (for the most part) have reported this. We have yet to get it in our internal lab and it doesn't seem to be that wide spread but it's a real show stopper.  The solution is to use the hardware mouse cursor which is in the video options area of the game.

OTHER TIPS:

Read the stickies! Post your debug.err.  Or at the very least tell us what kind of computer you have (though debug.err will tell us all about your computer).

among the reasons i bought this game, are:
1. Id heard that stardock's dedication to the customer was great
2. The updates gave the customers what they wanted

After pointing out that i was unable to update because my serial was apparently already in use, i was directed to a link to update to 1.0X, i did so, and guess what. Im going to have to reinstall AGAIN, it comes up saying "could not start activate.exe"
If stardock cant resolve this issue, im going to have to seriously reconsider buying another product by them.

Hey man. Go into your options and try two things.

1) Turn antialiasing to 0

2) Run in window mode and max the screen to the fullsize

Let me know if that does it for you.

Have you recently updated your version? A previous save from before 1.0x wouldn't load correctly on a newer version.

Can you send us the debug file and one of these saved games? Send it to [email protected]. Please be sure to zip them for us please.

Add no sound to the list. I have no sound....very frustrating.....Bought off website via download. All other games that I play have sound, including WoW, BF2, X3 Reunion, etc. Its not my pc.

Hi,

I have recently bought the game and using 1.3 beta (the most recent available). Out of 2 games total played I can finish none so far due to this bug. At certain point of the game (somewhere after mid-game), program crashes on "quicksave" on the first turn after interuption, i.e. you load next day from QuickSave file and everything seems fine, but, as soon you press quicksave (Ctrl-S) or try to save it under any other name, program crashes with "Out of memory" message. Reloading AutoSave and trying save again even without doing anything after loading produce the same crash. I can send AutoSave (I have put it aside) if you need it. My email [email protected]

Regards, Pavel

Pavel,

If you want to stick with a stable version, uninstall, toggle the 'show pre-release versions' option in SDC, then reinstall. That will get you 1.2, which doesn't have the save/load memory problem.
Toughguy1,

Make sure you have downloaded the multimedia pack as well. GC2 is divided up into chunks so you don't have to download it all to play, so be sure you've clicked the [+] next to it in SDC and gotten all the other parts (Multimedia, Movies, and Tutorials).

Curious how a game like this can catch your eyes and you just cant let it go again. Thats this genre and the nice design Stardock has done for you. I do experience crashes in every single game I play though, often int the design window when adding new equipment, an item I did not run across while scanning the known-bug-list. Well, if you wouldnt mind, I have a copule of empires to conquer...

can somebody fix this board to shorten posts!!!! if people are going to post entire log files, give us an option not to veiw the entire thing!!!!!

Thanks

I know no one really cares, but I do... Will there be a fix for the Survey Module\Galactic Guide Book cost issue (building a Galactic Guide Book doesn't make the Survey Module free, as it is supposed to do) at any point in the future?

Timothy: Please start your own problem thread and tell us what problem you're having. We can't diagnose a problem if we don't know what it is, even if we do have your debug.err.

Not sure if anyone cares but had expirienced 2 bugs so far. Both before downloading the bonus package, not sure if it had any bearing on the issues.
Bug 1: While playing a huge galaxy for a long-long-long time (I mean 7-8 hours straight) the turn button goes away. I mean I click the Turn button it is gone. The hard-drive light is flashing, the screen is screening, but the button is on a smoking break, and it is not coming back. Had to save/quit/load. Started working better in 35-50 minutes the button took another extended vacation. Once again save/quit/load allowed me to continue with no apparent problems. Not a show stopper, but an annoying little bugger.
Bug 2: Chose the Custom Galactic map with the "Corners" whanted to see what the fuss was all about, also changed my party affiliations from Demokrats to Republicans, oops, sorry from Federalists to Universalists. Clicked started - the system promptly chrashed. Three times in a row. Once again no big deal, but kind of curious about the custom maps - why the big mistery, can't we just make it work, and not keep me in so much suspence? I mean I paid, and all.
Also
on a side note, being an old fart, as opposed to a young Jedi, I tried to get onto the metaverse online and found the process of creating the characted to be somewhat unfriendly and cumbersome, as well as potentially buggy. I created an account with little effort, and when I tried to login within the game it told me I needed a character. Ok, so I go online to manage my profile or something, and I'm trying to create a character, so it wants a name, a pic, and a serial number. I eneter a name "Wild Rabbit", leave SN blank, and enter a pretty picture of a rabbit's scull. It tells me - wrong characters in the name. Ok, I change to "Wild_Rabbit" and it keeps getting me the same error message. One of us was wrong. And as much I'd like to believe your website who said that it was who was wrong, I still have my suspicions. I mean all the characters where from A-Z, a-z, and included and underscore "_" which according to them (you guys at Metaverse) is legal. So a brief summary of the game - 3 days, 3 bugs, 3 wins. Can we do the same thing without the bugs?

PROBLEM: Sound studders, particularly during intro and cutscenes.

ISSUE: I've found a few fixes for this problem. HOWEVER, they only work until I turn the computer off. The problem reappears when I next turn on the computer.

THINGS THAT TEMPORARILY FIX PROBLEM:
re-installing drivers (various methods tried, same result)
go into BIOS then save and exit (I don't even need to make a change to any settings)
run System Mechanic.

HELP: I've tried everything I can think of. I've updated all the drivers, I've re-installed XP on a new faster HD, swapped the sound card's PCI slot, updated DirectX, defragged, run System Mechanic, disabled all unnecessary applications from startup, re-installed the game software... As I've said, I can fix the problem, but only until I turn the computer off (complete off, will keep working if you reset). What stumps me is I can't figure out what's getting 'broken' when I turn the computer off, nor can I think of any common link on the fixes. Short of running the computer 24/7 or always doing my BIOS fix (the shortest fix), I'm stumped.
