Tech research detail

Whenever Im about to reseach something, I get somewhat confused seeing the fairly vague tech description.
Anyone else feel this way?
I of course am a total newbie...

An example:
Researching Ion drives: "Provides Ion drive propulsion"... aha? And that is... ?

Yes this is mentioned in the gamespot review, but it's not hard to figure out. What do space WEAPONS do? What does a unviersal translator do............... Not that hard to figure out imo.

Propulsion tech means a better engine.
Weapon tech means better weapon.
New economic tech? well its going to get me more cash one way or another.

The descriptions aren't really meant to tell you exactly what you'll get, its just a more interesting wau of saying 'better armour'. Just look at it in general terms and worry about the details later.

Be nice if each item under each tech was a hyperlink to a pop-up description of what each item received for each tech actually was.

I personally would've liked it if the tech descriptions were as detailed as they were in SMAC... but GalCiv has always been like this when it came to tech descriptions, so I'll live w/ what's given.

Yes you can figure out what a translator too. but it's important to kown how much the new tech you're researching will improve you economic, your factories, ...

Good to see someone mentioned SMAC... that's a freaking awesome game, IMO much better than any other Civ game, but I played it through so many times I'm glad GalCiv2 is finally here to take it's place
yeah, tech descriptions could take some improvement... a listing of what stats new components/buildings have would be just enough... but it's OK this way as well

IMO its still confusing researching something like Ion Drives.
Some of the other techs, at least, give you an idea of what that tech is increasing (ex. miniturization: +10).
So when researching something that doesnt, one wonders if that tech does anything at all, or if its just a prerequisite to a new line of techs.
