Tips for a huge newbie?

Well I have been craving a game like Masters of Orion 2 for a long time now, and it looks like this just might be it. Problem is, I havn't played a strategy game (save for Warcraft 3) for ages...and granted, WC3 is a totally different type of game.

Could anyone give me some quick tips or general rules to follow when playing this game? I tried watching the tutorials but it seems the video feed freezes but the voice will keep explaining what to do. I find this very distracting.

I've tried to dive right in but I really don't seem to be figuring anything out. Any help would be appreciated.

Buy a colony ship every turn for the first 4 turns. Design your own with a higher speed (4 with the right choice of starting techs - see custom race).

I do this instead..

1) Redesign a Cargo Hull to carry sensors, life support and engines.
2) Quickbuild the new Sensor Platform
3) Send your flagship to the nearest sun
4) Send your original colony ship between a couple of possibilities (until you know more)
5) Click on the sun in a system if it's exposed it tells you how many planets and if they are habitable or not
6) Rapid Build a factory on your starting planet
--
6) Click Turn
---
7) Rapid build a colony ship
8) launch Sensor Platform and head to a different sun
9) If Flagship finds a sun with a habitable world, send it off on autosurvey (double click on it.. click on auto-survey). If not, keep looking
10) Head colony ship to nearest habitable world)

For the next several turns build a sensor platform, then a colony ship. This way you can explore the galaxy quickly. Eventually you want to upgrade your colony ships for more range or faster engines. Research engines at first.
Get as many nearby planets as you can. Then switch over to building up constructors and your infrastructure with the occasional anti-invasion ship (cheap ships). As soon as your get consolidated, start on whichever strategy you wish to do, but always be sure to a) Build some military b) keep sensor platforms exploring c) Head for Trade asap so you can make some cash on freighters.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, both of you! I'm really going to have to flip through the instruction book a bit. I also noticed on the galciv.com frontpage there is a new guide tailored especially for newbs like myself. I appreciate the input and strategies, I'm sure they will work better than my random clicking haha.

make sure to make the trade techonlogy your first priority. Thats a real easy way to make money(besides taxs). Hope this helps

Hey Dave Pratt...I was wondering, how do I customize my Colony Ship to make it more efficient? I've seen alot of people talking about this.

Start a race with ion-drive already researched as a tech (may need to be custom).

For me the best way of making money is taxes, which come from population, and that has a limited growth rate determined by the number of planets you have. Hence the rush to populate as many planets as possibe as fast as possible. A planet is also a cheap 10/10/10 source of production/research. Buying ships (for the first 20 turns or so) also means you can have research full on (100%x100%) which is a huge source of cash.... I usually keep my balance between +/-500 credits and have 8 or so good colonies within the first 20 turns if the map is suitable - playing on normal.

I've passed from newbie to intermediate, so I can give some tips that helped me along as I went. I'll tend to start a game, just do whatever while I figure stuff out, restart after a little while, and repeat 3 to 5 times untill I've got everything down.

Once you got the basic start down, which others have explained, there are two things you should watch under the "Domestic" screen. First the resource slider, which is divided up between Military (building ships), Social (planet construction), and research (technology obviously). Don't neglect these sliders! You can just leave it at an even 34/33/33 split all the time, or you can give yourself a huge boost if you use it smartly. Like someone else said, if you're buying ships off the start, you can drop military spending for a huge research boost to push out those early techs. Or if your fleet is in more need of some tech upgrades rather than more ships, drop military and crank up research. Or if you're planets are mostly finished constructing buildings, drop Social, alternatively, if you want to crank out some buildings or a wonder, increase social. etc. etc.

One more tip that can be very important depending on the map you played, for constructing buildings. In my 'beta' game, I was playing on a mid-sized highly populated map. I got off to a good start with my colony ships, carving out a nice corner of the galaxy for myself, and as things progressed, started doing a lot of indescriminate trading, especially with the minor races. The problem came from all the 'building' technologies I ended up grabbing. Newer buildings are great, but they also take longer to build, and I had a lot of undevelloped land. Your economy is crashing, you need to build more economic buildings. Oops! Stock markets take 60 turns to build
After figuring that out, in my next game I'd upgrade to 2nd level buildings early on since those don't take too long, and populated the good majority of my open tiles before getting upgrades. Then depending on what you need most at the time you can research the new building tech, and the computer will que up all the upgrades on your planet for you.

One more tip I should add as you get farther into the game, keep an eye on the minor races planets. You can be friendly and play nice with them, but eventually one of the AI's will decide it's time to anhialate them. They usually have kick ass fully developed planets by then, and there's from what I can tell little repercussion for attacking them. And no warning that an AI is at war with them. Don't let them sneak in and conquer the little guys! Swoop in for the kill when they've crushed the minor's fleet, and you can add a huge asset to your civilization. Especially in smaller/less populated maps when planets are scarce.
