...Starship Bonus?

I'm scratching my head here. What exactly does it mean to have a "starship" bonus? If you have a +100% armor bonus you get +1 defense for each piece of armor you apply? What use is it to have anything but under +100% if the game doesnt recognize fractional values?

Plus, i noticed that when i find that when you have that encounter with space pirates (when settling a planet) where you can get a starship bonus, nothing changes when i check my stats screen regarding weapon/armor strength... so what the heck IS a "starship bonus" anyway?!

Can someone help? I cant find jack in the manual, it's not definite on what exactly happens it just tells you that a % boost gives you a stronger/tougher boost... but doesnt tell me *how*

the game can recocknize fractionnal value. ex: I had a +20% boost on weapon/armor. When I managed to have 5 weapons on my starships, I got +1 of bonus.

You will get the % of your attack or defense rating, always rounded down.

oh! Okay, that's awesome, then! I assumed the value was applied to each piece of equipment you tack on there, and seeing as 75% of the weaponry early on are valued at 1 a piece...

Now, all i need to understand is what this random event involving the space pirates does. If i choose the evil path, for example, the pirate leaders may sell me info/equipment that would give my starships a bonus of 50%...

+50% what? weapons ability? Armor? HP? None of those show up on my abilities roster...

In fact, by being evil in this one game i should have a starship bonus of around 120% O_O (i got lucky and had 3 separate encounters...) So what happens with it?

I think only ships built on the "Encountered Planet" get the bonus.

If you encounter pirates on Mars then ships built on Mars get the bonus.

I'm pretty sure that's how it worked in GalCiv I .
A little less sure that's how it works now.

i wonder if that's something you can check in the details section on the planet viewer...

I THINK the actual "Starships" ability is planet-specific, and only applies to ships built at that planet. I've never gotten it high enough to do anything, so I can't say exactly what it does.

The Weapons and Defense abilities are empire-wide traits that affect all your ships -- and are amazing when you get them up to 100% or higher. I have single ships beating fleets of nine. Sure, my ship is much more advanced than any of the 9, but it's my 130% defense and 110% weapons bonuses that make it possible.

Crap... you're right. I checked the planet with the 50% starship quality boost... it's there...

Well... then it seems that bonus is kinda horrible, then... What if a planet you find with huge amounts of natural resources gets no "starship bonus" event and one that has absolutely none gives you 55% increase...? Oh, well..

That would be called 'unlucky'.

Seriously tough, if your planet gets a major bonus you need to have a good think about it. A low quality world with a big bonus might be worth re-developing as in this case any ships that do come out of there will be singnificantly better than normal. You wont be pumping them out but you'll still be getting them.

Yep, starship bonuses are worht it--they increase both attack and defense by the given %, IIRC. Had a nice one in a recent game on a planet with manufacturing bonus tiles as well--once I got Psyonic beams I was cranking out 36 beam attack ships every couple of turns at a time the AI could barely muster 9 attack per ship.
