Ok, I admit, I suck so bad at this game

Got the game, love it, having fun with it even with my butt get kicking around like a ball in the FIFA's world cup final match
But I figure it would be even more fun if I can kick butt once after being kicked every couple of time, the problem is I don't know how.

Ok, all joke aside, I have been reading the forum and I have seen some people saying it's easier on normal. Well, I tried normal for like 5 times before scaling down to beginner, yet it doesn't seems to help. I tried different scenarios with different approaches but here are what usually happen:

- I lag in technology.
- I lag in economy.
- I lag in influence.
- I lag in military. ... to hell with it, I lag behind everything.

The thing I don't understand is that ... on the table. I have more planets, I have better researching tool and I'm well bet I have more researching facilities. But the technology that I have ... well, let's just say that if we compare the research graph, it will look like an economic graph between the US and a third world country with me not being the US.

As a result, I start lagging behind on everything. Now, I know the AI may trade with each others, but to what effective? The AI always drive hard bargain even when it shows that I have better diplomacy on the screen. Do the AIs have special deal between themselves?

Can someone tell me what's I'm doing wrong please. And yes, I do ultilize any resource I find

Have you tried developping a healthy economy in parralel with your research development?

I try to have 1/3 of my planets being Commercial Centers (a.k.a. $ cow), which allows me to have a 100% spending.

Which, in return, allows mucho research

In my current game, I've focused on economy (+20 with Federalists, and +50 or so with the chosen abilities). This allows me to keep my spending rate at 100%, and still have 300bc a month left over. I usually spend that on buying techs, which I can buy for around 2000bc each.

Still, the Drengin are owning everyone. They've got 1080 military strength (they have four or so stacks of five fleets each with four ships each hanging around their main worlds), while mine is only 104. It's nuts, and I have no idea how it happened.

I have to concur with Cikomyr's idea. I used to fare horribly on the graph as well, but then in one game I decided to create a few more economy buildings than in my last games and then I did much better.

Yes, do keep an eye on your spending. No insult intended, but if you haven't realized that needs tweaked and monitored then you'll be in trouble.

Also having a few planets set aside for moneymaking - lots of trade buildings, lots of farms, a high PQ world, and a fair few happiness boosters - will help the economy side of things greatly.

ok, it seems it focus too much on research. Actually I rather have any economic facility, thought Economic bases is enough.

I'll try this

One thing about GC2 is that it Takes money to produce anything... no money = useless production/research buildings. Also if your playing with more than one computer player, the AI tends to trade techs like they were candy. If you dont get in on trading with all the races early enough you'll find yourself behind all of em. (i like being the middle man of all the tech tradings in my games)

Econonic bases just make the situation worse, as they mainly give you an addirional advantage for social, military and research production...and remember for each shield you want to see on the top of your planets screen you need first 1BC money and second a factory or research center to produce that shield...but without money to production or research...
economic bases can only increase your money if you bild them right on your frighter lanes and thane build there the corresponding upgrades...Otherwise you will be better of with some influence bases, as tourist are also bringing money, and that just depends on much of the map lies in your influence area...

wow, it is a lot better now.

Instead of waiting for the deal to arrive now I actively involve in tech trade, and learn a few trick along the way, like keeping both my tech and my pocket full at the same time. Right now (on a normal game), althought I'm not yet able to kick anyone's butt but I can keep my butt from being kicked regardless. And being an intermidiate of galactic trade all races have a very cool attitude about me.

I just produce my first medium frigrate and leading the tech tree (though by a very small margin) and I have the biggest bank (negative cash flow though). But it looks a lot better now then it was before.

Thanks for all the useful tips, didn't expect the table changes this much

One thing that can help is taking the +50% research attribute along with being a Federalist. That way you get a good boost to both research and economy.
