STICKY: The Glitch Report

STICKY: The Glitch Report

Stuff we were too blind to see

This thread is for people who have found some bug, glitch, typo, oversight, you name it.  If you are running into a serious in-game problem (i.e. one that prevents you from playing) see the other sticky on IN-GAME problems.

Here's how to report something we screwed up on:

1) What the bug/glitch is.

2) How to reproduce it.

Note: Glitches are things that are definitely glitches.  This is NOT a wish list thread or a place to tell us how you think we should have implemented some feature differently.

Thanks!

Drones 2 & 3 (the starship defense mods) appear to have the same cost, same effect, and same size. In other words, no difference the last time I checked.

Hello. I found something that is more of an oversight, and not a true glitch. I have played many of the races, altering their abilties to my liking and then playing the game. However, the game remembers my selections and I cannot revert the racial abilites to their defaults. I even uninstalled the game (using the UN-WISE ap), did a disk cleanup and defrag, reinstalled the game and all my selections are STILL there!!!!! Graphic settings, galaxy settings, and racial settings and colors are still the way I left them. I'd like to use the 100% loyalty ability of the robot race, but since I altered it, I have no way to restore it. Any ideas?

Do a search on the left for "default" and you will find all the help you need BK.

Very occasionally when completing exiting the shipyard, all of my idle starports have been set to manufacture the ship I just finished putting together. Most times I don't notice until the first ones are completed. This has only happened to me in gigantic maps, when I have control of twenty or more worlds with idle starports, which makes it quite a hassle.

also, though I am sure this has probably been mentioned somewhere else, some of the symmetrical hulls have mismatched hardpoints (generally facing the same direction but turned 90' along the central axis), which I assume is unintentional. most of these discrepencies I have not been able to rectify using the angle modifying extras as the misalignment is generally along the axis they don't act upon.

After capturing a planet, sometimes I get insanely high population. I believe this also results in insanely high influence (on the map at least) which sets half the planets in the galaxy in revolt. The population will reset itself to planetary max after a turn or two and the influence will reset itself back to normal as well. This only happened after loading a saved game but I don't think it happens after every single planet capture. It happens for the computer too however, because on one turn the Altarian influence was 90% of the galaxy but after a turn or two, it reset itself to normal.

Another bug is that you sometimes can't group ships into fleets, even when you have plenty of logistical points. This one isn't readily reproduceable because sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Even for the same ships in later turns.

There is a bug on the diplomacy screen where you can appear to give influence to settle a deal, but once you click ok, the deal turns red again and nothing is done. Again, not always reproducible.

1) Maintenace cost of ships remain at 0bc (Both in the 'Ship Design' window, and 'Build Ship' Window), even though there is a Ship Maintenance Cost in the 'Financial' Window. I pay a lump sum for my ship upgrades so it can't be because of that.

2) New Games and Saved Games have the same Problem

On my galaxy map planets have been replaced by rings of white. Starbases, ships, resources and anomolies all show up as tiny white icons instead of being displayed using pretty graphics.

I have a 7800GT with the newest drivers with 2GB system RAM. I've been using the newest 1.0X patch ever since I bought the game.

The funny thing is, everything USED to show up fine until one day it just decided to stop working. I didn't install anything new, change any settings or do anything differently, just one day, I loaded up the game and poof, all my pretty graphics were gone. Someone suggested in a reply to the other person's post to switch his Region setting in Windows XP Control Panel to english (US). Mine is already set to that. I have even tried setting it to another language and back to US. I have also tried completely uninstalling the game and reinstalling it. I don't have any of the "disable" checkboxes checked in the Video options screen. This is getting pretty frustrating.

Can someone help?

Here are a few game breaking glitches and some minor ones:

(1) Upon loading a game, all of your fleets will have their movement reset back to full, except it will display as something like 4/0 (4 out of 0, if your max move would normally be 4). The end of turn button will show up as green (no moves left) but you can still move. Even worse, if your fleet attacks an enemy, with some movement points still remaning, those movement points will be added to the remaining moves. Example:

I have 4/0 and I attack the opponent next to me, my move changes to 8/0, attack again, 12/0 and so on. If I move first, so I get down to 3/0 and then attack, then the movement increases by 3 instead of 4. This bug was absurd in the campaign, where the dreadlords didn't have logistics, but only a huge stack of 30 ships (next to which my uber fleet was standing). I managed to get my remaining moves to 120/0 and then take out their every ship on the entire map in one turn!!!

(2) There is a memory leak of sorts in the game. When I first start playing everything is running smoothly. After about 2 hours the game becomes unbearably slow and crashes shortly after that. Restarting the game, everything runs smoothly for a while and then the cycle repeats.

(3) Large fleet concentrations cause laggy areas of map. For example, in one board the Alterians (intelligent) and I were on friendly terms and they were able to support a huge army (but it was doing nothing). All the fleets were sitting in the tiles around a planet, about 20-30 fleets of 5 ships each. Moving around that particular area was incredibly slow, but other areas of the map are fine... I understand that more objects are being drawn, but maybe just the top one for each tile should be?

(4) Ship designer is buggy. Sometimes upgrading won't let me remove parts (you remove a part and as soon as you click anywhere else the part pops back). Also, as mentioned by others, old designs tend to survive. If I upgrade a ship named "foo" ten times. "foo" will appear only once in the ship design, but it will appear 10 times in the build screens with all the previous versions.

(5) Fleets are buggy. Sometimes it's impossible to create a fleet with two ships (create fleet button clicks, but the two ships are still separate). Moving afterwards just moves both idependently. On one rare occasion while playing around with this I managed to create a 1 ship fleet (the other slot showed up as a blank and was taking up 0 logistics points).

(6) Metaverse website looks horrible in non-IE browser (firefox) and doesn't function. For example, character creation is impossible ("processing" screen just displays forever). I doubt this one will get any attention, but I figured I could at least report it.

A couple of things that I think may not have been mentioned numerous times already.

- "An emergency voting session has been called to determine whether or not we should go to war against the %s." -- All %s must be wiped from the galaxy on principle. There is no need for having a vote about the fate of the %s.

- In the Build Ship menu from the planet screen the option at the top to build "Nothing" only appears when "All" ship types is selected, but it logically should also appear for Core and User, for convenience.

- Playing on normal difficulty, I had "warm" relations with every civilization (all 8 of them) and things were a bit boring. So I decided the Arceans had got to go. Looking at them one last time, I thought I'd demand a tech, or else. Surprisingly they said fine, here you go. Unfortunately for them I never got it. It went back in the list of their techs that I supposedly don't have. I clicked on it again and "sent" with the same result. What's more when I left the screen and went back in, and would again demand something, they said no more gifts. Even more strange, I demanded something much later in the game from another Civ and they also said no more gifts, even though I never ever wanted something for nothing from them.

- Same game, at the beginning of a turn the Drengin came whining they're being wiped from the galaxy etc. They had 12000 credits themselves, but I thought whatever and gave them another 1000. I click done and the next screen is the same guy telling me how nice I am and by the way here's 747 credits for you. mm-kay.

- On my comp (Win2k, 9800pro) I have 512MB RAM and 512MB fixed swap file for a 1GB total limit. On a medium-sized map, after around 6-8 hours of continuous playing, the game will run out of memory and be killed by windoze. i.e. a memory leak. The more time passes, the less smooth it becomes to change from the iconified map to the 3D one (not noticably the other way) as a result of the swap-file being involved. Which on the one hand is strange because how much space can those little icons possibly take up in memory, and also makes me think the reason could be some memory not being deallocated in that transition (likely to go unnoticed it would be). With 1GB of RAM or automatic swap file one might never notice unless testing the human limits of long-time playing. Lastly you will want to preliminarily ignore this on the grounds of me having v5.11 catalys drivers (on purpose), but maybe someone else has or will report something similar and you can make a connection.

Edit: wadda ya know, another post just before mine also describing a memory leak. For completeness I should also mention that I'm using the latest (1.0X.1) patch.

Somehow the approval bonus seems to be broken, i have researched and built about everything that increases morale(in my last game), so i ended up with about 120 % morale bonus empire wide, then i built some buildings to increase the morale even further, about 60 - 100 %, but some planets only have an approval of about 40%, when i look at the explanation it says: -77 % from population, -33% from taxes, +17 from buildings, +13 from native ability and +10 from high quality planet

so seriously is this a joke? it should be easily 100% with all the bonuses

another strange thing i noticed: the more people living on a planet, the lower the approvel gets, what's up with that? If it goes above 21b people on a planet, it goes to something around 40 % on most planets, thing is, the population doesn't grow much with such a low approval, i don't understand why.

edit:
another thing that just came to my mind:
if you trade "trade goods" nothing seems to happen, it doesn't show up in the trade good list, i can't build the according building, do i at least get the bonus from it, i'm not sure

using latest patch, btw

UPDATE to post #28 in this thread.

Ran the game in cheat mode and used shift-ctrl-R to unlock the tech tree. All of the ship designs were then available for all 5 ship types. I have already deleted the saves that originally had this problem, so will try to recreate.

The thread at this Link has a little more info.

All of a sudden - have no idea why - GC2 has stopped saving gigantic games by a name. I can quick or auto save but not save with a name. I have tried making more space clean disking and defragging - none of these have had an effect. It did save by name at 1 point but not now. Have tried it with no other saves and with saves(Quick or auto) It does save on large - but I prefer gigantic maps.

Thank you Citizen HEEGZ. I just found the fix 2 minutes ago, and came here to share it when I saw your post, lol. No need to share it with all those posts you pointed me to, lol.

re: post #204 in this thread.

the glitch where all idle spaceports are set to make a new ship design is recreatable, it appears to happen when you upgrade a user designed ship type without saving it under a different name. On a huge/gigantic map you can easily spend a quarter of an hour setting all your spaceports back to nothing, so... please fix!

First, the ultimate bug and its workarounds is to NEVER use spaces in savegame/spaceship names. Using spaces in filesave names or in ship names causes:
1. Most savefile gltiches (duplicates with 0byte size, corrupt saves, crashes on overwrite, etc)
2. Non deletable ships in starport choosing queue (which dont show up on ship design page)
3. Duplicate names of ship designs on starport queue (ie, multiple ships with same name appeared on the list, even though they are not in the ship design page, in fact, they could be from a previous game)
4. Crashes when overwriting a ship's name.
5. Probably a few other minor problems that I can't think of from the top of my head...
Note: interestingly enough, if you save a ship's name as "Devastator MK1" and then try to save another ship with the same name only without the space (DevastatorMK1) it will ask if you want to overwrite and try to overwrite the one with the space. This HAS a chance of crashing your game, making 0byte duplicates of all your saves, and corrupting your last save aswell as making the Devastator MK1 design a permananet member of your construction list... I will STRONGLT recommend DELETING all ships with a space in their name... and THEN recreating them...If you need, save them under a different name without overwriting (to keep design) and then delete the one with the space, and then rename them again.

Specific bugs and their workarounds:
Problem: Ships cannot be stacked properly, creating empty fleets or incomplete fleets.
Solution: Save the game, exit, load save...

Problem: A quicksave you just did doesn't show up (an older one does show up)...
Solution: From my experience it is always there, after exiting and starting again both quicksave files will show up. This especially occurs with the "double files"

Problem: when the game crashes (usually due to use of space in filename) it creates duplicate save entries, those duplicate entries cannot be deleted individually (causes crashing if you try, deleting their "parent" causes them to disappear aswell) have no data listed on their name (ie, all the fields are blank aside from the name, thats how you can tell which one is the right save), and cause crashes if you try to load them.
Workaround: Don't try to load the duplicates, ignore them... Also, they seem to stop happening once you stop using spaces in filenames...

Sometimes after loading a game the sound will be unusually loud, much louder than the level set in the volume sliders. Moving the sliders around a bit immediately lowers the volume to the value indicated on the slider.

I had this problem too. It is reproducable. Basically, when you load GalCivII the sound will be set to the default, regardless of what is apparently shown in the audio settings. As soon as you adjust the slider on the audio settings, the sound is set to match it.

The UP proposal in which volcanic activity has made a planet habitable, and the council decides which civ gets to have it came up. The text read something like "...blah blah on planet has made it habitable blah blah." With no planet named. The vote went in my favor, and I had no new planet when it was all over.

I had this problem too.

The Diplomacy screen will sometimes show extinct races immediately after game load. This ssems to be the race that was first in the list. For example in one of my games, the Drengin.

To reproduce. Play a game, destroy the first race in the list of major races. Save. Quit the application, back to the Windows desktop. Load GalCiv II. Reload your game. Go to diplomacy screen.

I found that consistently I had difficulty getting my troop transport cargo ships to form into a fleet. Each time I tried, it would 'create' a new ship with logistics 0 and no ship icon. I didn't try doing a fleet rendezvouz point - perhaps I should have.

First off, I want to thank Stardock for a great piece of work, and offer my understanding in how much work it is to get a piece of software from 95% done to 99% done (no one ever seems to make it to 100%).

Playing latest update, 1.0X i think it is, on win xp, 1 gig ram, X700 pro Radeon card, Intel P4 3 gigahertz.
Playing custom race, medium galaxy, genius level AI.
Cheats turned off.
Settings pretty much default for interface.

1. My worst bug is savefile corruption. Usually happens when a game gets big and complicated. Sometimes crashes while saving, and that version is now corrupted. Even a full machine restart doesn't help. Often the corruption is built into savefile quietly, game keeps working, but the save files are being corrupted. I keep about 5 rotating backups going at a time, so when it hits I can always go back thru and find one good one. This includes the autosave every turn. Last night I thought I had lost a good game I'd been playing for 20+ hours, but found old backup that was not corrupted. I have modded the gal2type file a bit, but it does this with the vanilla version anyway.

2. I too, experience the fleet selection button, and find the data you get when fleets are piled up in a square to be weak.

3. Frequently, when I pay for ship and it says: 0 weeks to go, I don't get the ship next week. This is really annoying when you are desperate to keep the AI off a colony world in your backyard and you went broke paying for it.

4. (non-bug UI) I find the location of the turn button right next to the minimap to be a problem, since I use the minimap a lot with the weak scrolling behavior of the main screen, it is all too ez to accidentally click on the turn button.

5. (non-bug UI) When coming out of a fleet battle, I click done often to skip a movie, and then find my mouse right on top of the turn button, sometimes a double click causes a turn to go by.

6. (non-bug UI) This one is really annoying to me: I tend to move quickly, and tend to edge ships around looking for the enemy but not wanting to get too close and get nailed. After I move a ship to its full MA, the pov switches to another random ship, but if I accidentally click to move one more step, that new, random ship is now ordered to travel across the galaxy, usually in the wrong direction. This happens about once every 10-20 times I order a ship, in otherwords, constantly. Would like to see the "switch to next ship" feature with a disable option.

7. (non-bug UI) One fantastic addition you could easily put into the UI would be a DIFFERENT color destination circle for the ship you have currently selected. Sometimes I'm sending 10 fleets to an area in emergency mode and tons of destination circles show up on the screen, but I have no way of really telling (other than trying to read grid cooridinates) which one is the ship I've got in my hands now! Just make a green circle or something instead of the blue one for the currently selected ship!

8. (non-bug UI) The planetary combat screen doesn't say if there was some form of bombardment involved, whether you were giving or taking it.

9. There are lots of AI issues, but stardock has already pledged to be working on those, so no point relisting them here.

Thanks for the GREAT game!

Running 030606 version 1.0x

While under democracy, I can get a comp to pay me to go to war with another race and sidestep the whole "vote" thing. ...should this not be an option or at least governed by the vote?

I noticed my morale suddenly plummetted to 1%. I checked my planets, and they report my morale bonus as being +-(some gigantic number)

That's + (plus) - (minus) some gigantic number. :/

I tried to reload from autosave, but it didn't work ..... suddenly, blam, my morale is 1% even if I bring taxes to 0. :/ And this was a Metaverse game (first time I tried to do a Metaverse game) ...
