What to do with poor planets?

Poor planets like Mars only have a few usable squares for buildings. What do you guys do with them? With Mars I've tended to build a single factory, a lab, some food production, then convert the factory to an entertainment centre. This way it produces some tax revenue and a bit of research. I'm not sure how useful this is, but it seems that its better than trying to put a starport there (unless there happens to be a square with a manufacturing bonus, of course).

Usually I can go two routes. But that depends if you can upgrade any of the squares later with terraforming. But if I cant I would stick a factory and 3 research centers or factory 2 research and one entertainment if I have low approval rating. 4 research centers wont work because when its time to upgrade the research centers, you will be stuck :/

In the present patch, upgrading research centers to academies isn't worth it.

I usually go the Starport and Factories route. I can then forget about the planet improvements, and just let it crank out smaller ships and constructors... even if it takes a while for each ship, it is still worth it!

I have found that many of those low quality planets have some really nice upgrade squares. I ignored them in my first games and picked them up by influence later. Now I'm more apt to settle those near good planets in hopes of picking up a few 300% or 700% manufacturing squares. If there aren't any nice goodies on them, I still put a starport & at least one factory, entertainment spot and then mostly factories for the rest. These planets are good constructor factories. I prefer to colonize them myself as the AI seems to randomly assign labs to manufacturing squares and vice versa.
