Adding Weapons to Cargo Hulls

I'm new to this forum, and I was wondering if anyone's noticed you can add weapons to cargo hulls and use them to attack. Cargo hulls start off with 69(?) slots. I've only tried this once or twice and used it to start a war. If this is true it creates a huge early game tactical advantage. Have I missed a downside to using this tactic?

Thanks!

In other words, only good if you can strike first and kill before the target fires back - because you will die if you take ANY damage.

I like to use them in big games, stick a single weapon on, some sensors, and a lot of engines, and you have a nice freighter-killer. You could also use it with some fleets i guess, you could pack a lot of phasors on that kinda hull.

I don't think the fleet idea will work (they said the AI will target max weapons/min HP first), but the freighter-killers might, especially in the campaign. The only problem is, the weapons are bigger on cargo hulls. I usually just forget it and go with a small hull. Might as well at least stand up to other freighter-killers.
