STARDOCK DESIGNERS - Please consider making a MOM type game for your next enterprise...

This is just a thread about a possible next direction for SD to go in making another game, since they clearly know how to make a superb game. I'm more than happy with GC2 and will certainly be playing it for quite some time but I just wanted to throw out an idea / suggestion for their next game.

I'd love to see a turn-based strategy game similar to Master of Magic (Gawd that game desperately needs a sequel and yes I tried Age of Wonders which was okay) or at least set in a fantasy world / genre. It's quite clear that StarDock understands this genre so it'd be great to see them branch out in that direction.

Just some random thoughts here...thanks for listening, my fellow Galactic citizens, and one would hope StarDock designers as well!

FYI, Stardock has already looked into getting the rights to a MoM sequel, but things are still tied up in the legal sense.

I think they have already announced that they are working on a sequel of a well know fantasy game. Even if it's not MOM, at least it will be a game in a fantasy setting.

By the way I love the game!

Every gamer I know would jump at the chance to buy a sequel to MOM. Definitely one of my favorite games of all time even if it was so buggy it was unplayable when first released.

Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic was a good game in the spirit of MoM. Not sure if you were referring to the original, the sequel, or the second sequel in your post. The user created maps, scenarios, and mods definitely added to it's replayability. The town sieges, large assortment of units, ability to use conquered races, multiple hero development, and cool selection of spells made for a fun game. You can still find it a few online retailers.

I would like to see Stardock design their own Fantasy game, not copy a game from the stone age.

I am holding my breath until Stardock releases a MOM type fantasy game. ::taking deep breath::

Master of Magic was the best game of it genre. Sure it was an old DOS game that was almost outdated even when it first came out but people still play it today and that really says something. Not only was the game itself great but I personally think it had a great manual and spell book. For whatever reason I always enjoyed looking through them. Everything in the game was done very well from tatical combat to the spells and enviroment.

I look forward to seeing Stardock work up a "fantasy game." However, I would like to see them get the rights to the MoM title. MoM really set a standard of excellence that was never really surpassed. I think that Stardock could very well surpass it and thus I think it would be great if they got the title. I think, frankly, that they deserve it. I really hope the legal stuff gets setteled.

Otherwise I will be looking forward to whatever tantasy game they put out. Regardless of if it holds the tltle Master of Magic or not, I'm sure it will be a spectacular game.

Yes, a MOM game would be awesome. That stands to this days as one of my all time favorites. I wish I could get it to run - I still have it somewhere on 3.5 floppy The game had such great flexibility in item creation. If Stardock applied the same performance to item and spell creation for a follow-up game as they did to starship creation for GC2, I would be a happy camper. Of course, no worries if they wait a year or so - will still be playing GC2 for a long time I think.

PLEASE do this. Leave tactical combat in, though

master of magic has soo many decent features that are missing from civ 4 and some other games.

-tactical combat.
-tons of types of attacks(not just 1-4), like different elements and different attacks that can hit or not hit other types of units.
-units have tons of different stats and abilities.
-heroes have a major impact on the game.
-each race is extremely unique.
-wizard customization makes the game so different, each time you play it.

theres are over 100 units and over 500 spells in mom and over a few dozen decent types of wizards you can customize and try out.

+1 on the MOM remake, heck I still load that one up every now a then. Although it's getting tougher to run on newer systems.

Wasn't Master of Magic a ripof of Magic: the Gathering? I seem to recall playing it (for like 30 minutes), and then seeing Magic cards with very, very similar abilities and concepts (5 colors, summoned creatures, etc).

I'd rather Stardock focus on creating something with an original universe.

Hello Stardock, I just bought Dread Lords and can't wait to install it!

In the meantime, though, I must point out that masterofmagic2.com is starving for news. Their last update was May 31 05, and a week before that they reported: "Stardock continues to pursue the Master of Magic license, but development of Stardock's fantasy TBS game, which may be the next MoM, is on hold. Stardock is now focused on completing Galactic Civilizations 2 and the newly announced massively multiplayer RTS, Society. 'MoM2' is now in queue for future development attention."

Can we please get a nugget about what is going on in the Master of Magic or your future work front?

mmm... MoM2... /drools/

Full death books and releasing my wraiths of death upon the world... /evil laugh/

Last I had heard was that talks had fallen through with the owner of the MoM title. Stardock is still planning to make a fantasy TBS game, which IIRC they were calling Elementalist or something like that.

A search through old news in these forums or the galciv forums may turn up the actual post by Frogboy.

A new MOM-like Game would be awesome!

I've played the original just three months ago and it's still great fun.

Elementalist

Elementalist? Oh God no.

Anyone who thinks about using names like that should read about the most Epic high-fantasy series ever conceived: Link

If you read through that wiki and still think that using elements in fantasy is a good idea (or, indeed, any of the horribly overdone cliches and nonsense that are parodied on that site), well, I can't say that I didn't warn you.

Please use your imagination if you're going for some kind of high-fantasy game rather than relying on tired cliches. That site is an excellent anti-reference for your story work.

The magic system in MoM was indeed inspired by Magic: The Gathering. The rest of the gameplay, of course, was very different (and great).

Add me to the list of people interested in a fantasy game from Stardock! AoW was okay, but just didn't do it for me.

The only real similarity between MTG and MOM was that MOM used pretty much the same 5 color magic catagories (green = nature, white = good, black = evil, red = chaos, blue = sorcery?). And of course the same general kind of spells in each catagories. But after that the games were utterly dissimilar.

Ah MOM; good times, good times!

I thought I'd find find people here who remembered the great MoM. I'd love to see an updated version - I've got an old PII 400 with Win98 on it and MoM installed - there hasn't been a game that comes close to it.

Received GCII today, never played GCI so I'm looking forward to my first game. Just downloading the updates then I'll be off to wreak intergalactic havoc!

Download manager says I have to reboot... some things haven't changed since Win98 then!

Good to meet you all!

Mmm. Master of Magic. that would be sweet.

I'm pretty sure that's enough to cause a lawsuit, though. It's not like the M:TG 5-colors idea was so common as to be public domain. They way MoM used it was very specifically M:TG. Oh, they'd change a few of the spells here or there. But they still had the same basic creatures and concepts. A jury may not find it to be legally infringement, but it's definately close enough to go to trial.

I wouldn't want to see StarDock sued out of existence by WotC when they could instead excercise their imaginations and come up with their own game system.

I think the colours and groupings of spells had more to do with the spells/legends of the old celtic druids than any one particular game. There aren't too many druids around now and most of them aren't interested in 'legal matters'.

That said, after playing my first game of GC2 last night, I'm sure Stardock would do a fantastic job of a 'Swords & Sorcery' TBS.

Thank you Stardock for a brilliant game in GC2, this will keep me amused for years! It's the first game (since MoM) that I've played through a 'first try' scenario. I didn't get to sleep until 3:30AM. I'm nicely poised as the power broker in my galaxy (admittedly the other races just 'drool and make snarky remarks' - to quote Draginol) - fascinating stuff.

You naughty people at Stardock, how am I meant to survive on 1.5 hours sleep? The message on the quit dialog 'Surely just a few more goes won't hurt', indeed!
