Having problems with this forum - thanks for advice

I admit that I am a technical idiot, but this is the first forum I have ever visited where I seem to be having problems.
My problem is that I have a hard time navigating what appears to be these simple boards. I can't seem to see new posts, (perhaps because of the incredible number of stickies??), and I can only find my own because of the "my posts" button top left. If I make a post, I won't even see it in the "recent posts" box to the left. I cannot find a way to sort posts nor to search. Surely I am an idiot, but perhaps somebody can clue me in, maybe there are some settings or buttons I am missing, I would really like to take more part in this community. Thank you!
Also, these boards load very slowly for me -- perhaps I am doing something wrong (WinXP sp2, IE 6.0.29)?
