Uhm.... what?

Core designs can't be modified, true, but what stops you from making your own designs using large hulls? I don't think I understand what your problem is here.

Ummm... I believe the point of the game is to develop your own ship designs, which can be done with any of the hull sizes. The 'core' designs are really just there for the basics (constructor, colony, transport)

I have my own combat designs along with several "fast" versions of transports, durable constructors, or other specialized models.

I do agree there needs to be some work on the updating of designs, which currently makes a bit of a mess of quickbuild and such, but other than that, I don't understand your comment.

Core designs are there so the player doesnt have to design his own ships if he doesnt want to, with large leaps on through the tech tree, larger ships and more advanced weaponry becomes available. These pre-built ships are available from scout to battleship. So your not forced into designing anything (of if you havnt grasped the concept of what makes an excellent ship, being a scout, troop transport, heavy fighter or all out battleship).

Even if you couldnt create your own battleships in gal civ 2, you havnt researched it for nothing, youve still got the core model to build and fight for you so i dont know where your coming from.

if you built a custom ship then tried to save it with the name of one of the ships already in the game..then it will tell you you cant modify a core design.

like I tried to name a ship "ranger" and it told me I couldnt.. but I could name it "Ranger2"

You should be able to copy a core design (say for the cosmetic features), modify it, and save the new design under a new name. Link

I am trying to control my temper here. Not trying to flame, but........

I think the orignal poster simply doesn't realize the fact that he can design his own ships. Here's a bit of advice: Go to Shipyard, and in the lower left corner there's a button called "Create New"; click on it, and create your own ships starting by clicking on the hull type you like.

Oh, and one more thing, please be sure what you are talking about before you come here complaining....

I think the issue the original poster is having is that he worked hard to get the tech to make large hulls, but no core designs turned up when he got that far. This is probably because the core designs based on a large hull used weapons or other technologies that he hadn't researched yet.

So yes, the appropriate answer is "design your own." In fact, aside from the colony ship and constructor, I've never built a core ship, because I always want a ship optimized to what techs I've got, not optimize what techs to research according to a core ship I want.
