Help a newbie...

Hi folks!
Well I'm new to GalCiv and relatively new to the TBS games (played Civ3 and now Civ4). So here it goes.

I started new game, at like lowest possible difficulty (not even beginner), small map, with Terran. Started with making a few factories and research labs, markets on my planet and started exploring.

Built Colony ship and built colony on Mars, built second one and built colony on Cordelia I than II. Built a scout. At the same time I'm researching technologies and flying around with my starter ship...

It's been a while since I started game and still I don't have much more than 2 ships and 4 planets that I can't do anything on. Am I doing something wrong or? I've did run through whole space and found all the other races so first ship is flying with no real goal (no galaxy left to explore) I've got 2 military resources (+% to mining) and I've been building starbases to improve one of them.

What now? I can't build any other ship than Colony/Starbase/Scout one...

I've researched some tech up to Terraforming and if I got it right it'll auto upgrade my planets...

I also see that I can build over already built stuff (on planets) is it considered upgrade or does building something on top of my factory destrys factory and places the other thing there?

Can I build starbases in other races space? I've found one Economic Resource in neighbouring galaxy, so if I build starbase there will it give bonus to me or to him?

Should I have stardock built at every planet?

Dang there is like 100 more questions I want to ask but I'll stop here As I said before I'm newb so please bare with me.
Any tips/hints are more than welcome!
Thank you for your time!

P.S. This is possibly a double post as I couldn't find my first thread anywhere except in my profile ( I didn't choose Topic first time) so I hope this one will show correctly

It sounds like things are going ok.

Yes, you can build starbases in other races territory, but they usually don't like it. I'm suprised no one else has built on the that resource yet as the AI tends build on them quickly.

As you get upgraded factorys, markets and so on tech, your existing ones should get updated automatically. No need to replace them.

Start woking on building up your military, which may involve some more techs. If you wait to long without any defenses, the AI will take advantage of you. Besides, you want to go visiting them with troop transports anyway, don't you?

You can also start building influence starbases near other race's planets. The long term goal of that would be to get those planets to rebel agains thier current empire and switch over to yours.

I only build starports on planets that have reasonable manufacturing capacity. No need to waist the terrain tile to build one if it can't build ships in a reasonable amount of time.

Keep playing, keep experimenting, and keep having fun!

Terraforming is pretty deep down that branch of the tech tree. If you've gone that far and you don't have any new ships you can build you're seriously neglecting other technologies.

Additionally, titles must be 'worked' in order for them to become usable. Doesn't take too many turns. The manual is incorrect too, on its description of the coloring of tiles by the way.

There is however a galatic wonder (or whatever they're called) that if you build it on one of your planets it will automagically instantly 'work' all the workable tiles and make them instantly available to build on.

So it is good thing to balance research? Go slowly in every branch?

for the most part yes. Sometimes, especially for military techs, you need to concentrate in one area to get an advantage over your enemies.

Urijel,

I would focus less on the terraforming techs like everyone said. It sounds like you are focusing too much on that. In a game like this tech determines the pace of the game. When I first started out I researched whatever was cheapest (fewest turns) except for weapons. I always specialize in weapons. That worked good until I got moved up a few difficulty levels. I suggest starting out that way until you figure out what works best for your style.

To answer your question about the buildings. If you build a manufacturing building over a manufacturing building it will upgrade it. If you build unlike improvements over each other the existing improvement is destroyed. Say I build a research lab over an enhanced factory. The factory is destroyed and my research lab is built. Also, make sure you are buying things when you can. That money doesnt do you any good sitting in the vault. Buy what you can and soon you will see what is important now and what can wait. Those are the biggest things I can think of now. Dont be afraid to post questions. People will help you out.

Well silly me, I didn't have the slightest there was a campaign :/ (I need to pay that shipping and get the hard manual can't read pdf)

Well I guess that explains it... Lack of "action" or things to do I guess. I concetrated on a few techs and neglected most of the others so now I just sit there and press turn button

What tech tree gives you opportunity to build ships?

So in general I should balance my research and go slowly down the trees and perhaps choose one tree to follow more deeply (like weapons or diplomacy or something like that)

About starbase build in another galaxy... Do I still get the bonus or? (I haven't sent the poor thing yet)

All in all I'm stuck at work and with a few real life problems but I just can't get this game out of my mind for a second, I seriously considered loosing sleep last night
