Help a newbie...

Hi folks!
Well I'm new to GalCiv and relatively new to the TBS games (played Civ3 and now Civ4). So here it goes.

I started new game, at like lowest possible difficulty (not even beginner), small map, with Terran. Started with making a few factories and research labs, markets on my planet and started exploring.

Built Colony ship and built colony on Mars, built second one and built colony on Cordelia I than II. Built a scout. At the same time I'm researching technologies and flying around with my starter ship...

It's been a while since I started game and still I don't have much more than 2 ships and 4 planets that I can't do anything on. Am I doing something wrong or? I've did run through whole space and found all the other races so first ship is flying with no real goal (no galaxy left to explore) I've got 2 military resources (+% to mining) and I've been building starbases to improve one of them.

What now? I can't build any other ship than Colony/Starbase/Scout one...

I've researched some tech up to Terraforming and if I got it right it'll auto upgrade my planets...

I also see that I can build over already built stuff (on planets) is it considered upgrade or does building something on top of my factory destrys factory and places the other thing there?

Can I build starbases in other races space? I've found one Economic Resource in neighbouring galaxy, so if I build starbase there will it give bonus to me or to him?

Should I have stardock built at every planet?

Dang there is like 100 more questions I want to ask but I'll stop here As I said before I'm newb so please bare with me.
Any tips/hints are more than welcome!
Thank you for your time!

Perhaps you should give the campaign a try. It tends to be a great way to easy players into the game. Each mission has a very specific goal, so you can learn how to properly identify a goal (colonize a system, invade a planet, establish a trade route, take over a race with cultural starbases, ect ect) and work towards it.

In sandbox mode, all the options can quickly overwhelm the new player

I also suggest relearching some weapons techs and building some attack shis in the Ship Designer!

Hope these suggestions help!

You don't get a new starship design everytime you get a new tech. There are pre-designed ship that will appear in when you reach certain levels but mostly you'll have to design your own ships in between or if you want something that's different from the pre-fabs.
