Help with defenses

Ok, I read in the manual that defenses not geared towards their intended weapon (ie shields vs. mass drivers) will defend at the square root of their value. Does this mean that ECM and point defenses in general can defend against mass drivers and beam weapons?? Thanks.

thats the way i read it. That means if you have a ECM defense of 4, and someone shoots you with a mass driver, your ecm will work at defense value of 2 versus that attack. Dont make me calculate the square root of 3 though.

And its shields versus beams, as i recall.
