exploit, being a tech "whore"

totally agreed with stuie_acs and Matt. Actually I am using it as an exploit to boost my money and research. I just bought techs and then sold it to all minor races(except the one I am ready to invade). It not only made me really rich but I also have a lot of techs due to the trading. One thing though, I do not trade techs with major race, just using the money to buy whatever new techs they have.

Or even better, research something none of them have and sell it to them all. Especially NDT (non destructive techs).

That was my biggest problem with my first full game. Tech trading fueled my economy to the point of absurdity. The toughest choices I made were what to sell and when. Everything else was simply a matter of overwhelming an AI who had no chance to stand against my industry.

what are your levels settings? Techwhoring is a viable stratetegy at lower settings

I would. If you don't sell it to them the minors will, usually sooner than later.

Techwhoring works great on Intelligent. I play on gigantic galaxies with all 10 races so even if you don't get much from each individual trade you have a lot of trades. I'm not sure it's much fun, but it certainly works.

Hi, Vanir, interesting. My game was actually lot different from yours. The major races did not seem to get all the techs from the minors. Maybe because I was playing at "Normal" (somehow my computer crashed a lot on "intelligent"). I was playing against 9 major races. Two of them are 4 and 5 techs behind and one other is about 20+ techs behind.

The AI can sometimes get into a "Techwhore" position, so don't fool yourselves! Just because you're 4-5 levels ahead now is nothing if your enemy discovers Discovery Sphere's first. Techwhoring is good to an extent but you need to remember that you'll always spread your own tech around, giving benefits you might not want to give to these folks yet.

With hold your best for the top techs you aren't pursuing.

Often the AI will refuse to sell you military techs when they feel you're too powerful.
Some AIs will always give you crap deals. Terrans and Altarians are particularly notable on this.
After a point, the races that do give you good deals will be bankrupt and will give you pennies for your tech.
