Nano Ripper

holy cow, I didn't research this

After I completed research in Singularity Driver IV (I think) I was suddenly able to put this disgustingly powerful weapon component on my ships:

Nano Ripper
Space: 10
Damage: 8 (Mass Driver)

It does 4 times as much damage as Singularity Drivers, which deal only 2 damage, but costs 6 times as much. I have a great economy, so I can support creating a few fleets of these... Now my question is: Does the nano ripper always become available after researching Singularity Driver IV, or was I lucky to get it, or does it have something to do with the "Creative" trait?

What does the "Creative" trait do anyway? =D

I'd like to have a little more info on this, too. I went to design an upgraded battleship once and...there it was. My jaw dropped. I won the game with them.

Creative gives a chance at you getting random tech advances and better chances of getting tech upon invading. Also tech random events are better, from what I understand. After a quick check of the manual I have no more understanding of this trait.

The military techtree is far from linear. There's more to it then just shield beats lasers etc R.P.S. in there, makes it much more interesting and shows that a lot of thinking went into designing it.

I recently went down the mass driver tree and found that as well. Despite it's disgusting cost, I was making about 200bc a turn so I could afford multiple fleets with ships carrying those babies. Talk about war winners. I would have won even if I hadn't found those two precursor rangers

edit: and yea, it's there even if you arent creative.

It's massive, and a few fleets with this gun will drain your economy.

That being said, I think it should probably be bumped up in cost a bit from where it was.

The massdriver line might offer this headstart in firepower, but however, the final mass driver is the crappiest (but cheapest) of the top weapons. The biggest ship loaded with top of the line weapons will have a firepower of 208 using massdrivers, 275 with missiles and 220 with beams. On small hulls however, the balance is different...

Yes, I just played a game long enough to get these, and it was pretty much game over once I did. The AI seems to be put off by thier cost, affording me even more of an advantage. Has anyone seen the AI use these? They are neat, but game breaking that early in the tech tree, and probably too small.

I thought I first got this gun not when I researched Singularity Drive IV, but when I researched both that and Xeno Ethics, and chose good. Apparently I was mistaken. xD But yeah, a single fleet of those on Huge hulls won me the wars, cost or no cost.

In the late game, I saw the Drengin adapt to using the nano rippers... They were about to start ripping me a new one before I surrendered a planet for the final peace before my tech victory

Oh yeah I have you beat on the I was researching Beam weapons and I trades someone for Singular IV and when I designed my Newest ship there it was the NANO RIPPER. My jaw dropped off the map as I saw these things. I loaded up (I was not even mid game in bg way) I made a Medium size hull with them on, and it almost beat out my Precursor Ranger I had.

Then I made a Large hull version (extremly expensive to built theough for the time) and that did beat out my Ranger in attack, not defense though.

I do not feel the nanoripper needs further cost adjustment. I use is frequently to make sure the aliens adjust their spending on defenses and weapons, well also to just about slay anything that passes my way that looks like it could hold a tempting organic treat.

Anyhow, price is fine, tech tree is huge to get there already. Perhaps if anything, adjust it so that the damage is 6 vice 8 for all non-evil civilizations? Evil folks can unlock the tech that provides the ultimate kinetic round perhaps once they research xeno-ethics. That would be acceptable.
