Playing the game in a window rather than full screen

help me not be a muppet

Can anyone help me with this?

I know it was possible in gal civ 1, andI equally never got it to work there

Any help will be greatly appreciated as i'll be able to play and do other non fun things at the same time without needing to alt tab all the time.

In the Options screen -> Video Options:

1) Select a resolution smaller than your current desktop resolution.
2) Uncheck the "Fullscreen" checkbox.
3) Restart the game.

Easy.

if you select a resolution equal to your current desktop resolution, it'll be full screen but without the obnoxious 30 second minimizing - alt tab will work instantly instead of taking half an hour.

I am unable view my mouse pointer in fullscreen mode and thus cannot unselect fullscreen mode.

Can someone tell me what the registry setting is?

Set "Fullscreen=1" to 0 in the Prefs.ini file, which is located in your My Documents\Games\GalCiv2 folder.
