Im a little confused can someone help me. How do you know what defense to use because every race uses a different one. Should you just build up on the defense that will protect you from your biggest threat? But what if another races decides to go to war with you, you'll be completely defenseless and your once good defense will be useless. So should you just build up a little on each type of defense so that you'll be at least partially defended against everyone. Atually now that I think about it building up defense in all types is good and then when someone attacks you, you just build up even bigger on that one type that could block the attacker. Or should you just forget about defense until you are declared war? What do you guys think?

Well, that's part of the strategy. You have to choose attacks and defenses that are most efective. You can spread across all types, but you'll be wasting lots of space on your ships trying to put all those lower level defenses on them at once.

Keep in mind non-optimal defenses are not completely uesless, but are valued at their square root. For example, 4 shields are still worth 2 defense against mass drivers or missiles.

wait so any defense is really good at the thing that their meant for(lasers-shields). But all defenses are half that to any other weapon(for example armor would portect you from lasers half the defense but would portect you completely against missiles.

Careful, not quite half. Its the square-root of the value. So, if you have a value of 9 defence on shields, and your being attacked by mass drivers, your defence is 3 against the drivers...which isn't half (just happens the square-root of 4 is 2, which can be deceiving). And yes, your right. Defence would be 9 against lasers.

ohhhhhhhhh. So can shields block missiles better than mass drivers or are they both the square root(for example massdrivers do damage to shields but if missiles did damage to the sheilds would the damage be the same or would the shields block the missiles slightly better?

Square root huh? So does that mean lvl 1 shields are also lvl 1 against mass drivers and lvl 1 against missiles?
