STICKY: EASY TWEAKS to make the game better for you

STICKY: EASY TWEAKS to make the game better for you

Let us know

This is a sticky thread for people to request very simple tweaks -- things that could be put in and tested in less than an hour that you think would make the game more fun.

So suggestions like "We want a full blown encyclopedia" or "Can we have tactical combat?" should NOT go here.  These are things that should be very easy to do.

The goal is to come up with a list of little things we can do to put into a Thursday update so that people who had to wait to get the game at retail will be able to have something to look forward to to make it worth the wait.

Apologies if this has been mentioned already, but would it be possible at some point to add ingame movies associated with the use of one of the planetary bombardment options in an invasion? It would be pretty cool to see a movie of mass drivers in orbit turning the surface to dust a la the bombardment of Narn in Babylon 5. Or with that "drown your enemies" tech, see a huge tidal wave sweeping over an enemy city.

Great game and I look forward to what y'all will come up with to add to it.

(1) more of a bug fix, but when you have the ship list up (on the left side of the screen), it disables all left-edge scrolling. The engine should still react if you hit the mouse against the left edge of the screen regardless of what windows you have open.

(2) definetely allow hotkey assignments to be made by the player - just place them in an .ini folder. This allows maximum flexibility for those that are right/left handed and use the other hand for the mouse. In that same vein, please allow "next ship without orders" to be mapped. Since this is used almost every turn, I would like to assign this to the spacebar.

(3) Make anomolies easier to spot on the screen, they blend too much into the background stars.

[repeats]

(1) Allow diagonal scrolling

(2) 100% edge scrolling should be the same speed as if you "pick-up" the screen and move it with the mouse (its way too slow now and probably the reason the testers did not use it much)

SHIPS LIST:
-Possibly a fleet filter of sorts - fleets only, single ships only, fleets and single ships (that excludes ships in fleets), orbiting ships.
*Hard to explain but when I use this menu I'm either looking for an idea of my total strength,
ships that are fleetless, or my most experienced ship. There is no circumstance I find helpful
for my fleeted ships to be listed in addition to the fleet they are in. I might be looking for a
particular ship...but then I'm not looking for fleets and vice versa. Just some check boxed that
will filter out certain ships. Was thinking of a non-combatant filter but that's fairly easy to
accomplish with the weapons/defense sort.

PLANETS LIST:
-When buying planetary improvement update the progress bar.
-Add population growth number (90% of the time it's 200 of course for now)
-Add rings / moon indicator icon.
-All planets show up as defended now but when fixed possibly an addition of a number in the
shield, possibly one that doesn't count 1hp and 0 offense/defence ships. But if there is a
non-combat defender it shows a shield...no number.

QUICK BUILD LIST:
-Ships that are obsolete are showing up...ships that don't show up in the shipyard (and aren't
supposed to) bug/feature? IMHO they shouldn't be there.

RESEARCH SCREEN:
-Zoom feature to be able to get a better look of where you are on the trees. Maybe more colors,
prefer the current high contrast it now has but someone who's a better designer than I.
familiarization has made it easier but still get lost sometimes. (trade vs. influence for
example)
-List briefly what improvements do

DOMESTIC POLICY (ECONOMY):
-sliders need to be sticky (redundant I know)

FOREIGN POLICY (MINOR RACES):
-No espionage?

CIVILIZATION MANAGER (COLONIES):
-Rings and moon indications
-On colonies menu add an indicator for planets with forced production / research. Light blue in
the box like in the planet view.

CIVILIZATION MANAGER (TIMELINE):
-Race filter on timeline screen and graph that will adjust min max for filter changes (if you
want to see details of a civ that is lagging behind and is an ally or enemy it is near impossible
if there is a civ that is kicking butt in that area.
-Show min - adding weeks to the show min is tedious on longer games. If you want to just look at
the last 100 weeks in a long game it becomes a click frenzy. Either add a shift click to
increase by 10 or a hold--> to accelerate (like many alarm clocks' time setting).
-Smaller legend - More of a note to self to see if there really is a problem with the large
legend popup---seems intrusive

SHIPYARD

COLONY MANAGER:
-Morale tooltip doesn't match number
-Super/galatic/trade goods get lost in the crowd of improvements (colorcoding projects on menu
would be nice)

PLANET DETAILS:
Getting the details on an unooccupied planet gives you the details of the last legal planet
detail, add a filler unhospitable planet detail?

GAME MAP / GUI:

-Clicking on treasury should bring up domestic policy
-Clicking on star gives redundant info for planet owners (Bob, Bob, Bob vs. Bob (3))
-Default map view and top down view are the same. ('1' and '4' shortcuts)
-Double clicking on the current target detail for goto (simulate 'c' shortcut)
-Double clicking on ship in fleet to bring up details

More right click funtions - cancel is great when used but underused mouse button in menus
Be nice to be able to use Ctrl-L on any screen

Please extend the right click = launch feature from the Info Square onto the GNN display.

Please allow an option to deny previous user designs in new games (Or better yet, a screen where you can see all user designs and choose which ones will appear).

i second that, its a bit annoying going into starbase screen everytime or having to leave gnn to launch ship or having designs from old games

Thanks for asking us!

Two thoughts:

1) When you're at the galaxy creation screen for a new game, the game should give an estimate of about how many habitable worlds the galaxy you're creating will end up with. Just a line that says "This galaxy will probably have 15-20 habitable worlds." This way when you're changing the size of the galaxy, and the abundance of stars, and the abundance of planets, you at least have some baseline against which to anticipate the consquences of the changes.

2)this is similar to some other suggestions i've seen - I'd like to see the GNN report act kind of like a to do list. Have that turn's GNN report accessible throughout the turn, so you can start the turn and perform a few actions, and then say "alright, now where were those ships that were completed..." Also, it would be most useful if it updated live, e.g. if your planet had formerly been construcing nothing, and you went to the planet and began a project, when you got back to the GNN report, it would have updated to say "Now Building: Starport" (or whatever).

Thanks again!

(Now if only you could fix the bug in the game that makes me keep needing to sleep when i could be playing... but that's probably not an easy fix )

This is a request I originally made in Beta, but it did not make it into the final version....

In the civilization manager, when you go to the planet list, I would REALLY like a "switch all planets to military production" or "switch all planets to social production" or "switch all planets to research". It is a REAL pain to go to each one individually.

Thanks!

I vote for:

*) No tech trading game option

*) Abilty to know where (the route) the selected ship/fleet is going on the map and how long it will take to get there.

*) Abilty to perform 'upgrade', 'construct', etc commands to ship in a fleet.

*) Diagonal Scrolling

*) Move the next turn button away from the mini map. I have clicked on the next turn button by accident too many times.

*) By the way, it's annoying that the hint screen disappears once the new game is loaded. Most of the time I can't finish reading it.

*) This one is really annoying. If I go into the build ship screen from the planet screen and click done, I go to the starmap. It should go back to the planet screen.

*) Ships in orbit can be placed into and defend as a fleet.

*) Each tech in the tech map should tell what the tech does in a tool tip or popup when rolled over, clicked on etc.

*) The current sector info at the top middle of the screen should change when scrolling, right now it only changes when you click on the starmap.

*) I am not sure about this, but it seems that having a faster drive does not improve the results of a battle. You would think that having a faster drive that the opponent would give an advantage.

*) William Shatner should do voice-overs when you discover a tech.

*) Disband ships from the 'ship list' screen.

That is all for now.
There are many good ideas in this thread. if you want to put them in a x-pack (along with other new and interesting content), then I would be happy to buy it.

I would like to be able to scroll the research map with the arrow keys. For me scrolling around is quite annoying and much to slow. Also, being able to zoom out the research map, would be a nice thing...

A) Include another icon slider so that I can have ships as icons no matter what the zoom, and be able to see planets and their names zoomed all the way out.

B) Include a simple icon change for fleets. Fleet icon as is, and include 1 dot for a small fleet, up to say 10 logistics, 2 dots for 10-20 logistics, and 3 dots for anything above that. Instead of the transport icon being used for fleets that have transports in them (which can cause confusion, especially when attacking AI fleets with transports in them) use a gun or other symbol to denote the fact that they have troops.

C) Similar to above, icon changes around planets to denote the amount of forces defending there. 1 sheild for 1-3 ships, 2 sheilds for 3 - 5 ships, etc.

At the zoomed out level, its hard to see the current selected ship brackets. Make the brackets bounce in and out around the ship, and brighter, so its more clear which ship is selected.

Just a couple of suggestions/questions.
1. Make the independent AI's adjustable (a single, global adjustment) so they aren't far more efficient than the major race AI's.

2. How come the "Overall" score has no relation to any other score in the game. I find that there are many times where I have already eliminated a major race from the game, beating them soundly in every category, but their "Overall" score beats mine by 3x or more!?!

Curse you for showing me the grand strategic view! I never play zoomed in any more! And that brings me to my suggestion. A checkbox option. Zoom in on battles. When ships meet in tet-a-tet combat, I'd like to see closely which ships are involved. All I see in the strategic view are tiny icons blasting each other. Not terribly rewarding, even when I win. Why make the game so dang *pretty* if I can't see it? I don't want to complete my turn, THEN zoom in on the map, hit end turn, and then zoom out just in CASE the Drengin are moody this turn. Please, consider this option!

New tech(s):

Personal Spacecraft (Xeno-Entertainment / Logistics): population can migrate between planets to maximize happiness and even out pop-cap. Threat: if you don't dominate in influence, population can migrate to another empire. Mitigation: Loyalty and morale techs.

Population Control: population is capped at what can be sustained contently

1) When two major civilizations go to war there should be a pop up that tells the player that this has occured. Right now the player is only informed when civilizations declare peace. It'd make it a lot easier if the player didn't have to check the foreign relations screen every turn to see if war has broken out.

2) Can we be allowed to trade ships with the minor civilizations, please!? There have been a few times where a minor has gotten a hand on a galactic resource but since I'm playing a good civ I'd rather buy it from them than steal it.

How about a "green light" in the ship designer... I think there's just red, yellow, white, and blue. The "blue" light is also more of a cyan to my eyes at least...

I'd really like a green light in particular because I like to put navigation lights on my ships... red on the left, green on the right.

When viewing the planet manager screen, it would be really helpful to have a minimap somewhere with that planets position in the galaxy marked. Whenever I get a pop-up to tell me something has been built I find myself clicking on that planet to view its status, then exiting to see the galactic map so I know which planet it is, then clicking on it again. I find it hard to keep track of which planet is which just based on the name, and a little geographical reminder would make all the difference.

Also, would there be a way to have more information at your fingertips when the United Planets is assembled? If I don't have access to how many starbases I have/who is at war with whom/etc. how can I make an informed choice on how to vote on issues relating to these factors?

Cheers.

Didn't quite have the time to read all 366 replys (okay I did, but I'd rather play this game more in my free time) on this topic, but I saw at least two other fellows who wanted the ability to rename stars. Shouldn't be too terribly difficult, as the game allows us to rename planets, spaceships, and such.

So I Xth, Xnd, or Xrd the request for renaming stars.

I'd like to see:
1. lights with lighting effects
2. vapor trails and other engine effects
3. the ability to adjust camera angles on the main map
4. weapons and sensors that do not change size when you use bigger hulls (defenses, life support and engines should change size)
5. a way to retrieve ship designs from past games so I don't have to start from scratch everytime I start a new game
6. more available space on large and huge hulls
7. the ability to add miniaturization as a racial ability
8. the Kryos Hull System Mod as a regular game feature

I'd *really* like to see the grammar cleaned up. The diplomatic scenes are fine, and can be explained with the Universal Translator glitching.

But in the planet screen, I saw an extra "the" in a description box that tells you what the buildings do, and some of the technology descriptions are really bad.

I don't mind the humor and the funky grammar when it comes to speaking with another race, but I really hate the crappy grammar present in the game as a whole.

can the arrow keys control the map view instead of the movement of the ships?

I second this one.
1) Tooltips
2) Sync up the main map and the mini map automatically
3) Highlight enemy ships somehow
4) show autopilot on main map
5) have a popup similar to when a colony isn't doing anymore building for when a starport if full. (hate it when my uber production planet is sitting dowing nothing )
6) allow upgrades to whole fleets without having to break them up

I would like to be able to add as many points as i like when making a civ at the start.
I would love to have the ability to make my dream civ.
when i declare war i then go to talk to the civ that I am at war with and they still treat me as a friend even though we are at war. Is there any way for civs act real. I just want the enemy civ to talk to me as if they hate me, and talk to me when we are friends as if so. Thank you very much....
As far as I know we still can't rename stars - only planets - it's quite aggravating.

And there is still a dismally small number of stars in a gigantic galaxy.

Not an easy fix, but there are numerous posts about how unclear the bonuses are for economy, production, morale etc. There is nothing to explain how it works, and sometimes if you try to figure it out you are just left wondering if the designers just forgot to make the bonuses have effect.

Make an encylcopedia of game mechanics. Make sure the math is correct.
