STICKY: EASY TWEAKS to make the game better for you

STICKY: EASY TWEAKS to make the game better for you

Let us know

This is a sticky thread for people to request very simple tweaks -- things that could be put in and tested in less than an hour that you think would make the game more fun.

So suggestions like "We want a full blown encyclopedia" or "Can we have tactical combat?" should NOT go here.  These are things that should be very easy to do.

The goal is to come up with a list of little things we can do to put into a Thursday update so that people who had to wait to get the game at retail will be able to have something to look forward to to make it worth the wait.

- Tooltip as mentioned earlier should be shown quickly.

- Launch all ships in orbit is a good one, but I would like even more to be able to ctrl-left click ships in orbit and launch em with launch button.

- diagonal scrolling

- show time to destination and little trail where ship is going with autopilot. atleast show time of arrival would be welcome.

- "I also would love to see some sort of "area of effect" circle when building starbases. I try to maximize my coverage by placing it between stars. Little did I realize that I was off by a few squares for one (or all!) of the planets."

Must!

- No tech trading option

- When you upgrade ships, it really should rename the old ship to new ship types name-

Not so small ones but this thread has it all

1. Name mining starbases after the resource they are mining. (Morale Mining SB 3784 v Mining Starbase 3784) Both player and AI.

2. Simple way to select all the ships at a square once I've selected one. (I may just not know it)

3. In governor's screen, way to say "All ships producing Foo, set your rally point to Bar". (this probably exceeds the one-hour rule)

4. Sort planets by orbitting ships (sort by total attack+defence of orbitting ships). Would help both finding undefended planets (and weakly defended ones) and planets with extra ships (for use in attack). Thought more in terms of my planets, but would also be helpful for foreign planets to, when I have that information.

5. More find-grained minimap zooming. On huge, 100 shows the whole map and 200 shows less than a quarter. After a few turns, I am working on a small portion of the map, but more than the 200 zoom-level shows.

6. Auto-cash/influence for trade (either the min I need to give or what the max they will take)

7. Display turns until destination reached in autopilot ships (estimate, naturally)

8. Make a planet defecting to you a social event to let you go there at your leisure.

9. Option to make ship production for colonies with a rally point not a social event. (default to current behavior) Will clean-up my interface when going constructor-crazy.

10. Unclaimed resources on minimap

11. Resource/SB list like planet and ship list. (almost certainly exceeds 1-hour limit, but alternative to #10)

12. Ship list limited to all/orbitting/not orbitting.

13. In governor's view of planets, distinguish between building nothing (no social building) and building nothing and no more empty squares. Perhaps "(nothing)" v "nothing". Ideally, available upgrades would be considered an empty square, but I understand if that's a performance problem (I use auto-build upgrades anyway).

14. When viewing a built building (or proposed), show value after bonus (in parens, maybe?)

15. The planet-square bonus adds to "Approval", but buildings add to "Morale". Unless these actually mean different things, resolve this particular disagreement. (I would like global agreement, but this would be a simple step to correct what I find the most confusing piece of the dual-term usage)

I have a list of simple bug fixes, but will hold off until on that list until I've observed them in the most recent patch.

Agree with autolaunch suggestion (maybe a pseudo rally point only for colonies?)

2 things i would like...
a line that shows you currently the course of a ship that you moved.... kinda like the trade route line but it would match the color of your race but be much brighter and a number near each ship on zoom that shows how many turns till it gets to "X" location. kinda like heroes of might and magic.... when you moved someone or que'd a command to move you would see a pathfinding line.....

and also a build on every starport or cancel on every starport button.... nothing like playing a huge map game to have to click on 60 planets or have to use the planet list and have choose each starport to build my huge armada...

Here are some more 'easy' fixes

1) When a ship build event occurs on the GNN it would be great if it also said (Starport now Full) if that was indeed the case

2) It would be uber-cool if you could select a ship, hit a button to mark it some how. Then in your diplomacy screen all such marked ships would be marked with an asterisk. It would save me from writing down the numbers every time I want to sell/give ships to other civs.

3) When there are stacked ships there appears to be no way of telling how many troops a ship is carrying or how many moves it has left. This is a little bit frustrating.

Thanks for making a game that is one of my all time favourites!

Good suggestion dano13 about troop carries. It would be nice to see what modules a ship is carrying.

Fleet management should be eaier, mentioned here many times Iam sure. But as it is one of most important aspects of the game it should be doned well. At the moment disbanding a fleet is cumbersome and more annoying is that you have to move ship out of stack just to get the upgrade button visible.

- What I have not seen requested many times is true Sleep mode for ships. Guard work some of the time, but not all. In my mind the current Sentry is bit useless and should be replaced by true Sleep mode aka ship activating only when clicked.

- And please do stop the suicide troop transport / constructor runs, they kinda ruin the mood. Ai is quite competive with me but there solo running non combat vessels ruin the good ai totally.

Separate savegame folders for each game.
A way to change your ships colors once game starts. I picked red, and my opponent was same color.

nayotake: there's a governor's screen that allows you to set starport builds (same place as globally setting rally points).

It's not really that much of a problem, but I'd like being able to use tab to switch to the password field when you're signing in for a metaverse game.

First I'd like to complement you guys an a great game, good job Stardock. As for a suggestion, this has probably been mentioned in this thread elsewhere, I'd like to see a visible path on the map when plotting an autopilot course. Exactly like Civ's "line" where it shows the path a unit will take and how many turns it'll take to get there. Something like this would be great.

P.S. A giant encyclopedia (ala Civlopedia) would be great too.

I would dearly love to see some sort of notification (blink, change color, robot report) when a starbase is full and when it becomes open for new modules through research. When you have numerous starbases this is a pain to keep track of.

On the constructor preview of influence, I don't have a problem estimating that pretty acurately and anyway the influence grows a great deal with the addition of modules.

Change autopilot navigation so that ships prefer to move diagonally (across the coner of a square) first. As it is now, they waste moves going around obstacles.

It's hard to believe that not many people mentioned this before. But I tend to design a new custom race including ships every game. I find it very annoying having to obsolete all the previous designed ships from other custom races.

I played one game as normal Drengins and they didn't seem to have the ships I designed as a custom race. So it just seems the game handles the custom races as one race when saving your custom designed ships.
It's just silly having to obsolete all sorts of funky looking ships that were designed with another type of hullstyle enabled...

It would be nice if in the trade screen, when you right click a mining starbase, it tells you what resource it's mining.

Some bugs:

- When a constructor moves to an existing starbase, the "Do you wish to improve this starbase" prompt should have the name of the starbase as well as the image. Sometimes only the image shows up..I've never seen the starbase name show up.

- As a Star Democracy, before you go to war the senate gets to vote on it. In this screen, the text on the left that says "senate will vote to go to war on %s" ...I believe the %s should be replaced by the name of the race you are about to attack? This occured when I was attac- er.. liberating a minor race "Carinoids".

I wouldn't mind an option to see the owners' names on their ships and starbases on the main map, or as a tooltip. Having to select the ship or starbase whenever I'm not sure is no fun.

Also maybe a ship sand box where you have full access to all techs to build ship models with weapons and save them for use or import into the game.

Isn't "battle of the gods" scenario supposed to start with all techs?

Yes, I started a BOG game last night just to design some ships.

Design them, save them and quit the game the designs will be there for you when you have the tech level

A couple more thoughts I had, regarding the Metaverse this time...

1. Have an option available where the game saves your username and password data even after you quit the game and come back, instead of having to retype it.

2. I'm not sure if I missed an already existing easier way to do this, but have it so you can load a saved game after you sign in. Currently I end up clicking all the way through, starting a new game, and then loading the saved game.

Peace & Luv, Liz

If it hasn't already been mentioned, the ability to delcare war formally would be nice withotu having to attack a ship.

Apologies if this has already been posted (it's a long thread ), but these two ideas, relating to the same screen should be very simple to do: when starting a new Metaverse game, the first thing you're asked to do is enter your Metaverse account info. It would be nice if this screen would do two things:

1) Have an option to remember the last account used, to save those of us who aren't sharing the game with family from having to enter the same info every single time.

2) Pressing Tab should take you from the username to the password field. Having to use the mouse to do this is silly.

Hi,
Not sure these have been mentioned, and probably not so easy a tweak but:

1) This was mentioned but: a way to disable the tuen button when not on main map. I too have hit turn when in planet screen or ship design when I meant to hit 'Done',
2) Please: a view on the mini map or any map when on the planet screen. There is no way I can remember where each planet is when moving through them from GNN or whatver. Maybe make the plater surface view window a tabbed view to go from surface to map, showing where planet is.

I commented in another thread about the tool tips being touchy or not coming up at all when looking at the ships in orbit screen of the planet display. The top line is touchy, but I can get the tool tip to go if I stop moving the cursor for a bit and then move it a bit more as suggested by a Stardock person.

The tooltip does not come up at all for ships in the second line of the display. This was true of pre and post Friday patch.

Maybe these are in the game somewhere, but I havent found them, and would REALLY like to see them:

1) Ability to upgrade all ships in a fleet, assuming the whole fleet is the same class of ship. Hate having to upgrade each ship manually

2) Ability to issue an order to upgrade all ships EVERYWHERE when you obsolete a ship after creating a replacement ship (so when you obsolete a ship, asks you if you wish to upgrade all those ships to a new class)

3) And most importantly, I want to more easily SEE enemy ships on the map. Need an option to put a halo/glow/circle of that races colors around that ship/fleet. Its easy to spot enemy ships when youre zoomed out and in icon mode, but zoomed up close, especially when looking at small/tiny ships, its very annoying.

I'd like to be able to reach a ships option screen or upgrade ships while in a fleet or while on the same tile as other ships (maybe this is already possible, in that case I haven't found out how).
