Why on why Can't I Edit Existing Ship Designs???

I like designing ships, that said it would have been great to be able to edit existing designs. Case in point: I want my constructor or colony ship to be upgraded with faster engine. I don't want to design a whole new ship just to do that. All I want is to click edit, remove old drive, add new drive, DONE.

Intead I have to creat a brand new design (which for some reason never looks quite as good as the original than I have to name it, save it, delete the old design, etc...

Any thoughts???

Select the ship you want to upgrade, and click the upgrade tab at the bottom left of the screen. It's right next to "New" and "Obsolete". The only ones you can't upgrade are core ships.

Then, click on the component you want to remove. Click "remove" in the display window. Then put the new part on. Click save.

To upgrade your existing ships to your new design, get the ship by itself, select it, and choose upgrade from the options. this will pull up the upgrade screen.

If you knew any of this, and this was a sarcasm post, sorry. Otherwiase, enjoy

I do know all of this, however when I select a "core" design, like the constructor I can't "upgrade" it. I can only create new or make it obsolite. Maybe I am missing something (i'll try it your way tonight), but I tried it many times and could not figure it out.

It even says in the manual that you can NOT edit Core designs.

you can't edit core designs because they slightly bend the rules of ship creation i believe. From what ie remember most core ships usually cost more but have extra capacity than most people can start off with when they first get them. However you can't edit the design. You can later on upgrade them however once you have passed the requisite technologies that enable that class to exist (such as medium hull for your flagship)

Thats been my experience so far.

So you can't upgrade it? If so, then my point is "WHY"? Not everyone wants to spend 50% of the game building constructors or colony ships.

Well, it took me a good ten second to build a new "default" constructor or colony ship--one that I could upgrade. Throw a couple of engines, some life support, and the required module on there and you're good to go.

winterlight, I hear you. I did do that, then deleted the old design so that my list of designs is small. However, some of the core designs look really great and frankly I do NOT want to spend the time making them look better or designing my own ships. I played a few games and came to the realization that I just upgraded my existing designs WITHOUT making any new ones and insted concentrated on my strategy in the game.

I'd rather take the designs that come wiht the game (core) and continuosly upgrade them with better stuff.

All what I need is ability to create new design "from template" using old/core design as such template.

I second the template idea. While I will make my own ships for fighting agianst opponents, some core ships simply dont need a lot of design.

I thought about that. Just create your ship and don't put any weapons/defenses/engines or if necessay a basic engine and save it off. You can then just "upgrade" it and save off new designs by giving it a new name. This shouldn't over write your blank ship.
