Stargate?

Is GalCiv2 based off of the shows Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis? If you look at the Yor Collective their history is like the replicaters. The Torians kindof look like the asgard. The reserch "Beyond Mortality" is like acsending. Then when reading about GalCiv2 they were constantly talking about the "Stargate". And there you have it, I think that is enough evidence.

It's an amalgamation of many major sci-fi lores. Star Trek is also prevalent in the game, as is evidenced by the phasors, photon torpedoes, and even the initial survey ship description "to boldly go where no one has gone before..." I've also seen some Babylon 5 references, but I forget what they are. I'm sure there are tributes to a lot of our old faves in the game, Stargate included.

The question isn't if Galciv is based on Stargate, It's "Is Stargate based on Galciv."

The original Galciv for OS/2 predates the original stargate movie IIRC.

are they even allowed to use the term "stargate"...

Isn't it trademarked by MGM? I'd think they'd have to use "jumpgate" or something....

I actually thought "photon torpedoes" were trademarked as well?

Brad said he starting writing the back stories in college in the early 90's so that would predate Stargate. However, prior to that we have seen these themes in Sci-Fi.

There's actually a full blown company called Stargate here in washington. Not sure what they do, but their symbol is a ring with a ramp leading into it. Makes me wonder...

All Sci-Fi can be a copy of previous sci-fi on some level if you look at it the right way. Any idea you have now has been used before in some way, pre-cursors, sentient robots, hyperdrive, stargates. It's all been done before and it'll all be done again in new and inventive ways in the future. I don't believe at any point anyone set out to activly copy anything though.

If you are referring to Washington state, that company probably has something to do with Stargate production. They film in Vancouver.

I believe there was a series of books..(to wield a red sword .. I think?) which I believe that were written or co-written by tracey hickman that was about a world where everyone and just about everything used "magic" if it didn't have magic it was considered dead. Well there was this "stargate" like device on the planet that activated one day and in came a bunch of soldiers and scientists from earth whom the locals considered "dead" since they didn't have magic. I believe there was even a roleplaying game made after this book series. It was interesting and wierd, and it definately seemed like some kind of stargate rip off, but the books actually came out long before stargate the movie showed up. So it's more likely that stargate probably took it's ideas from several sources, this series being one of them no doubt.
