Custom Race portraits

It's really easy to create your own race portraits- simply open up your GFX/Races folder, and use the existing race portraits as a template. Paste a new portrait in, save it as a new .png file, and voila. I created a custom Borg portrait and logo. I imagine you could even paste your own mug in there and be your own evil dictator as well. If anybody wants the Borg ones I created, let me know where I can send them! Joy!

Oooo! I've been wanting to do this. Thanks a lot!

Just one question, what pictures do you need to copy and edit to have a fully custom civ?

At last! My evil dictactor doesn't have to be the fellow with the moustache any more . . . I just avoided looking at him But he was the only choice other than the standard human head . . .

Yay, now I can finally slap a psilon portrait in for my uber-technology race!

You don't have to paste over an exsisting race portrait. You need a 256x256 png file at 24 million colors. Call it "RaceImage__" __ being a number higher than 59.

Does anyone know what I can do to change the races names? I don't care the portraits are not ok, bust just changing the names helps me playing in different "universes".
Thanks!

Actually, you don't need a number. Doing something like "RaceImage_syreen" will do just fine.

Ok, I'm new to modding, and I can't quite figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to add a new pic for the race portrait,, and all that's coming up is a blank (solid black) portrait square. Can anybody advise?

Maybe you haven't saved it in the right format? I use Photoshop, open up one of the race portraits or logos, and then paste a new one on top of that (Just to make it easy). Use the transform command in Photoshop to resize your new pic- these are small .png's. Save it as a new name so you don't overwrite your original file- as a .png, and it should work. I've done Star Trek Federation, The Borg, Star Wars Empire, and Star Wars Alliance. You can then create a custom race by picking your new picture and logo. The next step is trying to create each races unique starships. I'd love to create a Deathstar, or a borg cube.

Done! It's been uploaded. Give them time to review it and it should be available in the library soon. If I do any more customs, I'll upload them also. I can think of a few...an Invader Zim would be fun...oooohhhh!

You can nearly "google" any image on the internet and resize it so possibility is endless. Last night I made (more like resized and saved to right format ) a Charmed portrait. Power of 3. Heh. Neo from the Matrix. Darth Maul...

I'm curious, but how would you go about making a race logo that is transparent on the 'outside' of the logo image?
For example, let's say the logo is a circle. Now I want my circle to appear in game as a circle, not as a circle with empty graphic around it. How do you do that?

The easiest way to create a logo with transparent edges is to build the image in Photoshop over a transparent layer and then do a save-to-web with your output file type set as 24-bit PNG file. That will totally do the trick for ya.

do you know if there is a way to do this with MSpaint. i don't know of a transparent background feature. it is a very basic program, as you probably know.

mspaint can't do that....unfortunately....but there should be some free utilities out there....google is your best friend..it does everything as long as you pay attention...
