Flagships?

I kinda miss how "flagships" don't have any combat ability whatsoever anymore (like they did in GalCiv1).

It just seems like any race capable of warp travel should also know how to shoot something, and a totally unarmed flagship seems unlikely?

Eh, shooting things in space is a whole lot trickier that shooting them in the air or on the ground. The Space Shuttle, which is only an orbital bus is already going faster than any aircraft ever constructed.

It's sort of how aircraft were when they were first built. Nobody figured out how to effectively arm them for some years, and even then it took decades before they became true warfighting units.

Sadly, I didn't really notice this and sent my flagship proudly off to help fight the war...

Captain: Lock on target and fire!
Helm: Um, sir, we don't really have any weapons.
Captain: Doh!

I think it's more to simulate that your career soldier Admiral and his cronies are'nt going to risk their soon to be pensioneer hienies. It also probably makes the targeting system work, enemies target the ship with the highest attack to defence ratio. The flagship is the last boat you want to go so if it has no weapons it won't be targeted. This simulates tactics withought tactics, the other ships would be protecting the flagship. It's the result of the limitation of having no tactical combat but the overall results should be the same as if there was.

I totally agree. Its too much of a pain to upgrade my flagship and so its been serving (not very effectively) as a radar picket.

What would be nice is to have flagships treated as special and have them get real cheap upgrades.
