Upgrade core ships

Is there a way for me to upgrade my core ships? I'm not that good at designing ships, and I'd like to just be able to take a default constructor, colony ship, transport or freighter and stick on faster engines.

Actually I'd like to do this with any core ship. Is there a way to start with one of them and modify it without trying to rebuild it from scratch?
