Sensor Ships

It costs less than a fighter and costs less to maintain. Yet it has more strategic value than a large fleet of ships.

Ladies and gentlemen, the 'Lucidity'.

I am playing on a medium sized map and bought this sucker from the main seller (the one with no interest, cost me only 250bc), and with its 59 pc sensor radius i can literally see the whole map. I have lots of miniaturization, and max level sensors, but still this cant be intentional.

I did the same thing early game. I used a freighter hull, added TONS of sensors and some engines. I was able to recon a huge area and send out a fleet of colony ships ASAP.

Yeah, I've been doing similiar stuff - I agree that there should be a limit - either on the number of sensors you can put on one ship, or on the maximal sensor range a ship can have.
When one ship can see the whole map, the whole concept of sensors looses it's meaning.

I agree, this is a game balance issue.

The most elegant solution would be to have extra sensors give diminishing returns, sensor range-wise.

The diminsihing returns makes sense the only other idea for the ship design that was lacking in my opinion was another limitation besides capacity. Maybe we could have a energy usage maximum and make sensors drain a whole lot of juice. It could be tied into the hull just like capacity.

It would prevent instances like this.

Na, I don't think that introducing another variable like energy consumption would be a could idea - would make stuff to complicated, and then you'd need to balance it and make the AI understand it... just keep it simple and make a cap on sensor range somehow.

By the time that level of tech has been researched, I have usually already explored the entire map with scouts anyway. Also, you get eyes of the universe at that point. Won't the AI have colonized all the good planets by that point?
