The "manual" button fires up the PDF version of the manual. If you don' t have Acrobat installed you wouldn't be able to view it. It almost takes superhuman effort to NOT have Acrobat installed on your machine. Maybe it's out of date.

Miniaturization appears to work a bit differently than you might expect. Rather than shrinking the size of your various components it appears to increase your hull sizes. At least that's how it seems to work to me. Either way, the gains can be pretty minimal, especially with small hulls. Gaining one "level" of miniaturization doesn't suddenly let you put a bunch more stuff in a hull.

In my (limited) experience miniaturization alone won't give you "killer ships." Ship building and the related techs seem to be very balanced, and to get more "oomph" in your ships requires a combo of better components of all types (they get smaller as the their tech cycles up) AND miniaturization to hopefully squeeze in one more high tech component every once in a while.

As your tech advances and you get bigger hull sizes you will notice a big difference compared to your earliest ships.
