Help with influence starbases?

Apparently I placed all my influence starbases wrong - they don't seem to be doing anything at all. I placed one in the center of 3 good planets, thinking it would amplify the influence of each planet in the starbases range. I then added several more influence modules to it, but it didn't seem to do ANYTHING to the nearby planet's influence output?

So how do they work exactly? What source of influence DO they amplify, where is that additional influence applied to the map, and where do I ideally want to place them relative to my colonies and the colonies of my opponents?

I think you place them in the area that you want to influence. In other words, if you want to influence an altarian planet near you then place it close enough so the influence from that starbase affects it. If you click on the starbase it will show its influence range.

What I don't understand is: what is the source of the influence the starbase amplifies? How close does it have to be to one of MY planets for it to have enough of my influence to amplify for it to be worth building?

You don't build it near yours, that does nothing. Found one close to enemy/neutral planets and you'll slowly incite them to rebel.

Doh, I wish I read that yesterday, I built 3 influence stations around my planets, was wondering why they didn't help me at all.

Ok, so what is the ideal place to build them?

Build influence SBs at the very edge of your territory?

Build them midway between your outward planets and the enemy border?

Build them exactly 8 parsecs out from your outward planet, towards the enemy border?

Something else entirely? I just have no clue how to do this.

build them on the egde of your territory if you have the military to defend them otherwise id put them near the border but closer to yout planets for better protection

They are good in your territory as a defense. If you have a planet that is in their influnce you pretty much need to build a base by this planet to save it.

Ok. Influence means you win races over with ideas. A race becomes so enamored with your culture due to trade/influence that they want to become part of your side, leaving their own. Planets will fall without shots fired.

Each planet you own generates its own IP (infleunce points). There are bonus tiles if you're lucky. Also, certain planetary improvements give bonus to IP (embassy, stock exchange).

Now, Starbases also enhance IP. Sometimes you may need two or three good starbases built up if you're wanting to 'swipe' a planet by influence. You also need to research the yellow path pretty far.

I'll leave you with one last thing to remember. The AI ain't no slouch. So expect to defend those bases if that's your strategy. Well on the harder levels. Easy level, it may be Game Over for them
