STICKY: Having an IN-GAME problem? Here are some tips!

STICKY: Having an IN-GAME problem? Here are some tips!

You can tell us anything...really!

(1) IF you plan to switch between the game and something else a lot, run it in a window. You can do this via an option in the game's video settings.

(2) The game will run in any high resolution your system will support.

(3) User created data files and preferences are in the %mydocuments\my games\galciv2 folder

(4) IF you run into some problem please let us know the following things:

  • What OS you running?
  • Is it English or a particular language (Swedish, German, Japanese, etc.)
  • What video card do you have?
  • What kind of CPU do you have?
  • How much memory you have

(5) If you run into a serious problem (i.e. game won't start, crashes, etc.) there is a debug.err file in your GalCiv II directory. Post the contents of it here.

(6) UPDATE YOUR VIDEO DRIVERS.  We're serious about this. If someone responds to this post with a "Game occasionally CTDs, here's my debug.err" and there's a video driver from 2004 in it, we'll find you ;p

(7) The game should run on pretty much any system that supports DirectX 9C.  YOU MUST HAVE DIRECTX 9C or later installed.

(8) There are some first generation Intel Extreme adapters that don't work with the game.  We're talking very old ones (i.e. <2003).  They don't work because they don't support True Type fonts in games. Nothing we can do. There's no work around other than to get another card.  Based on the beta, this shouldn't be an issue as nobody ran into it.

(9) DO NOT use this thread to ask whether the game will work on your system. If you have doubts, wait for the demo. If you can play any other recently released game, then you can run this.  (last time we put a thread like this up we had people with monster machines asking if they could run the game on it).

(10) IF THE GAME CRASHES ON YOU we want to know why. In Stardock Central in the "free stuff" area there's a program called Smart Exception.  Install that, run it, and if the game crashes, it will create a log that will tell us literally what line of code it crashed on.  Email [email protected] or [email protected] the file and we will take a look.  Don't forget to tell us what you were doing when it crashed to help us figure it out.

Good luck!  We'll be checking this thread regularly.

PLEASE only post if you're having a problem of some kind.  Thanks!

My computer has dual monitors, and while running full-screen, I can move the mouse from one monitor to the other. If I click while the mouse is on the wrong monitor, the game minimizes.

Locked up on me trying to create a newer scout ship with better engines. Crashed to Desktop will install this program or should I send in that debug file thats in the program???

Interesting enemy bug:

1) Select an enemy planet defended by ships
2) Click the small "set destination" button in the central display
3) Select a rally point from your civilization
4) The AI ship will leave orbit, like it was just launched!

More [features]:

I've played the campaign for a bit.

Twice so far the [next turn] button has disappeared on me. At that point I can only get to the menu via mouse, nothing else seems to do anything (In GalCiv 1, when this happened, hitting [space] or [enter] often fixed it - here it doesn't) Reloading seems to be the only solution.

Once I saved a game in which near all of my ships were heading towards a rally point. After reloading, all these ships were haring off in unexpected directions, mostly they seemed to follow my scout 'Sneak' around.

In the last campaign game I sold Netro Mancer a load of tech for cash & 1 tech - the cash never arrived. Next turn the [next turn] button disappeared again.

cheers, -Peter

Game crashes : At first the game often crashed when I saved, thereby corruping the save game.
I thought this might have been because of old video drivers, so I downloaded new drivers for my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB.
After this driver update, the problem has changed a bit. The game now occasionally crashes at the end of a turn.
I use a Athlon AMD 64 machine with Windows XP Pro SP2 (Dutch version), said video card, DirectX9.0C, 1024MB RAM

A case for Smart Exception ?
I keep getting crashes ruining mid to late game sessions. I downloaded Smart Exception but I do not know how to use it. I have it running when I reproduce the crash (I have save files that I can go to for reproduction of the error), and it makes an exception log. When I hit the email exception and generate it says "SDCZip is missing". However I have 3 files for each crash that gets logged in my C:\ folder: A DMP, CRA, and a text file. I stil have the original save files ingame aswell.

What I am suppose to do here, I am not sure.

I had this crash happen numerous times (in every game I started), most of the time when I relog my last save game it does not reproduce itself. But Twice now I have it reproducing itself on a dime. And in the latest case no save file was far back enough to "walk around" the bug effectively ending that campaign.
It seems some of the problems are very specific.
For example, the frequent crashes in the campaign mission Apocalypse completely stopped after I decommissioned (destroy button) the scout that I received at the start of the mission.

It was a gamble based on the weird behavior of autopilot destinations being changed to the location of the scout.
It seems that scout was the culprit... nocrashes since its removal.
Very weird stuff.

I wouldn't have put it exactly that way, but I agree with this post. WHY put anything in a folder other than the install folder (except for the obvious, like DLLs)?

Not to be contrary, but this is arguably a better way of doing things in the Windows world. First of all, your "My Documents" folder will be on the install drive by default. But you can move it. Start -> right-click on "My Documents" -> Properties. You can move your documents right off the install partition if you want to, and in fact, that's what I've done on my system. The next time I need to reinstall Windows, I know that I won't be clobbering my data files.

One of the other benefits of keeping game settings and other such data in My Documents is that if you have multiple users on your system, playing the game, it neatly keeps the settings for each player in their own private data directory (wherever the user or the administrator has put the "My Documents" folders--again, this doesn't have to be on the system drive.)

By insisting that all game-related settings data be located with the game, you make it much harder to make the game playable without administrator privileges.

A number of games published by Microsoft, EA, and other publishers use local folders in "My Documents\My Games" to keep your game settings and save files in. After reinstalling a game I haven't played in several months, I have been pleasantly surprised to find my old saves and settings all preserved from the last time.

It took me a long time to come around to this line of thinking, but life in Windows-land is much easier if you try to keep all of your writable data under your personal "My Documents" folder. It makes backups a lot easier to manage, since you only need to keep track of one big bag of stuff, instead of chasing all over the various places on your system, looking for little bits of data that you want or need to keep. I view application software (including games) as things that I don't need to backup, because that stuff can always be reinstalled. Keeping settings data in "My Documents" makes that process a lot easier to manage.

Mendel, maybe you should try downloading the multimedia pack. That's where all of the sound and music files are.

I posted this in another thread, I guess I can put it here too:

Something else that I noticed along this line. Ocassionally the save confirmation box does appear. Just not over the ship design screen. So you click save a couple more times. You think nothing is happening. Then you click done, the screen changes and there is the confirmation box. At this point I either add text or just click okay and instant CTD. It isn't a regular thing, but it happens once in a blue moon.

I'm having the same CRASH problem as others. The error log doesn't state anything interesting. And all of my savegames become corrupted and the game crashes again if I don't restart the campaign mission. It's already the third time I restart the 3rd mission!!!!
It happens when you click the TURN button.
SIGH!

I also get the crash during turn processing resulting in the corrupted savefile. Attempting to email you the SmartException results also gave me the "No SDCzip file" or whatever error , though it has the exception data (just won't send it to you lol). Email me if you want me to start manually sending you files. System info:

I have also had the CTD from a custom designed ship... Was just getting into the swing of things and bam....

Noticed it was from a completed ship/goto screen, have yet to try the other way to see if it is isolated or not.

PLEASE need to fix this.... crashing to my desktop makes my eyes hurt ! Like the light comming on at midnight just as you awake... I see the light... IT BURNS !!!!

Have all latest drivers for MB, Vid Card and BIOS.

I can't register Gal Civ 2. Stardock either says I have an invalid serial # or that I registered the game with another email address. Its a legit copy, purchsed at Best Buy in Lincoln, NE yesterday.
I've had a Stardock account since March 2003.

I am suffering from a graphic error. When the game is running, the visuals are distorted immensely. The ship polygons are stretched and convoluted, sometimes huge parts of the screen are covered in bank color fields that dissapear when the zoom is changed, but reappear again later. The text is blurred and distorted as well, with breif flashes of readability before becoming illegible again. The odd thing is, some of the text appears fine consistantly, while other peices are impossible to read.
I am running the latest drivers for my graphics card, and have the most recent DirectX 9.0c.
I have a:
Athlon 2400XP
Geforce 6600 GX
1GB Ram
Windows XP Pro SP2, English version
Nvidia Nforce sound drivers
Nothing in the background besides Winamp

As a side note, I believe the problem is related to my GfX card, since I had a similar problem running World Of Warcraft. The graphical errors were fixed there by running the program in OpenGL mode, but as far as I know, there is no function for that in GalCiv2.
I can send screenshots if you want them.
