Tokens vs "Direct Payment"

prolly obvious, but..

I can either buy the game for 44.95 or buy 5 tokens for 39.95, and use the tokens to buy the game. Is there any reason to not buy the tokens? If there isn't, why not sell the game for 39.95?

I'm not losing sleep over 5$, just curious

If you are going for the electronic download version anyway there's no reason not to choose the tokens. I did and everything went fine.
If you expect to get the expansion (assuming there will be one - but why shouldn't there) or the upcoming unnamed "fantasy strategy game" it would be even more efficient to buy 10 tokens (for $69.99) and spend the first 5 on GalCiv II.

I've looked everywhere on the galciv2 and stardock sites. I can't find the token purchase option anywhere. If anybody knows where the token purchase option is located, I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction. Thanks

bssy: I just purchased galciv2 so here's what you do:

Go to http://totalgaming.stardock.com/. In the upper right under top selling games you should see a link to Galactic Civilizations II. Click on that. Once you do, there will be a link to preorder the game near the upper right of the page. Click on that. Now you will see that you can purchase the game for $44.95 or for 5 tokens, but that option isn't available to you.

Below the option to purchase the game are two options to sign up for totalgaming.net. Click on the buy button for either the 5 or 10 token membership (you'll always be able to buy more tokens later so it's no big deal I think). Then continue as directed to sign up for totalgaming.net and install Stardock central.

Once Stardock central is installed and you run it for the first time, it will ask you to associate with a stardock.net account. Now even though you've given your email address and a password when you signed up for totalgaming.net apparently this didn't create an account for you. So create the account.

Now, I wasn't able to find Galactic Civilizations II to purchase from within stardock central. So here's the tricky part: go back to the Galactic Civilizations II page on totalgaming.net. At this point you are probably not logged in to totalgaming.net but near the top of the screen there should be fields for your user name and password. Use them to login and you should now have the option to purchase with tokens on the preorder page.

Now when you start stardock central Galciv II should show up under purchased software in games and you can download most of it immediately.

I really appreciate the step-by-step. It was right on, I'm downloading as I write. Btw, since it is download only, how are you guys doing a backup? Can we copy the game files to a cd for backup? I usually have to reload/format for various reasons 1-2 times a year, so I need a backup of all my applications for reloading. Thanks in advance

Good point. I just let me friend know about this.

I'm confused now.  If I buy the game through stardock central, I'm using 5 tokens (saving the other 5 for the expansion, since you buy 10 at a time).  If I order this way, do I get a hardcopy also, or do I *ONLY* get the electronic copy.  That would justify a $5 price difference (no physical copy if you buy with tokens)

Also, why can't I post on the galciv2 web forum.  I used to be able to post.  Do I need to buy the game in order to be able to post?

Also, on the "games" link in stardock central, there's no mention of GalCiv2 there.  Shouldn't it be there, or it won't show up until release.

If someone from Stardock is reading this, can you E-Mail me to indicate that you responded here?  I'm planning on buying GalCiv2 now, but I'm not exactly sure how to do it!  I'm planning to buy 10 tokens and save 5 for later.  I also want to know if I get a physical copy of the game or not, and if I have to pay extra for a physical copy.

Like fsk+, I also want to know if the version from totalgaming.net is only the download version. Can we get some clarification from Stardock? Thanks

Games purchased from TGN are download-only. So no, you don't get a physical copy of the game but you can make a backup with StardockCentral. I also assume burning the directory GalCiv II is stored in to CD/DVD will also do the trick. At least it worked with GalCiv I.

You have an archive feature in SDC And you can have it be used before ecah new download. Very nice if there are beta update showing on SDC that might cause unexecpected beahviors.

Well, I think that there are surely some registries keys. So copying only the GC II directory may not work.

This has pretty much been answered but....

Games purchased from TotalGaming.net are download only. For GalCiv II only we will be offering those who order the game using tokens the ability to "upgrade" to the boxed Collector's Edition for an additional fee + shipping & handling.

And lastly, yes, you can backup your stuff to disc after archiving the game in SDC. Simply copying the installed files to a disc will create some issues as you won't be able to recreate your registry keys by simply copying and pasting.

True. Exporting the registry keys and copying them to the backup media as well is not that big a deal. But one should only toy with regedit if one knows what one's doing.

I see the Dark Avatar is not available to purchase with tokens. Anyone know why that is? I was saving tokens for that exact purpose and am miffed that the decision was made not to make it available that way. Is there a timeline for this?

Where are you seeing that it is not? The DA page on TGN has had it available for 3 tokens since preorders were opened last year.

Interesting. I was able to buy it through TGN, but in SDC, the expansion comes up as N/A for tokens while showing the correct price.

Who knows, but thanks for the redirection kryo

I wouldn't mind buying DA using tokens as well. Hopefully Stardock allow it in the future.

You can purchase Dark Avatar using tokens, just not via Stardock Central. The game's available via the TGN website at:
