The Terrans are neutral.

I thought they were broken down further into chaotic good and the like?

What happens if you have an alignment shift of evil to good or good to evil as was demonstrated in one of the gameplay examples??

What I mean, is what happens to your alignment specific buildings ?

I am pretty sure the Altarians are the only default "good" race. The humans and Torians are neutral..

Default.. yes..

But there was that game example where the Drengin were flipped to good by a revolution. That was interesting

If I've been reading correctly, alignments can be changed and are not defined in terms of buildings and technologies until you research an ethical technology in which you choose good, neutral or evil. Before that there is just an ethical score out of a hundred which affects the AI behaviour.

In the beta unlike GC1 the alighments are fixed. There is no option to make the Drengin nice and the Altarians evil

Correct. The initial alignment is fixed. But in game events can modify the alignment of the AI. There is a gameplay example on the board somewhere where there was a peoples revolt which turned the Drengin from evil to good mid-game. An interesting development

However, once you choose your alignment through the appropriate research, can it ever change again based on decisions you make ?? And if it can, then what happens to the alignment-specific buildings that you may have built. i.e. what happened to the Drengin alignment specific buildings when they flipped to good ????

That is a puzzlement. In beta games when I have chosen Neutral the good and evil choices are still available for random events and the positive and negative benefits seem unchanged.

Also the Secret Police improvement is still available even though that is an evil improvement. I am not sure what would happen after choosing an alignment if you consistently made different choices

Is there a way to toggle random alignments and AI personalities in the game? That is something I'd definitely want for Sandbox.
nope, no toggle

The only random choice in the beta is galaxy size and I am pretty certain that is true in the final release

Right out of the game's RaceConfig.xml (which you can change to alter their default alignments, if you want).

Range: 1 (Pure evil) -> 99 (Pure good). 50 is neutral.

Altarian Republic: 99
Torian Confederation: 75
Drath Legion: 75
Arcean Empire: 50
Thalan Empire: 50
Iconian Refuge: 50
Terran Alliance: 50
Yor Collective: 25
Dominion of Korx: 1
Drengin Empire: 1

Minor Races (besides the Snathi): 50
Snathi: 1
Dread Lords: 1

These are the races alignment according to RaceConfig.xml:

PURE GOOD:
Altarian Republic

CHAOTIC GOOD:
Drath Legion
Torian Confederation

NEUTRAL:
Arcean Empire
Iconian Refuge
Terran Alliance
Thalan Empire

CHAOTIC EVIL:
Yor Collective

PURE EVIL:
Dominion of Korx
Drengin Empire

Minor races are all neutral except Dark Your, Snathi and of course Dread Lords who all three are pure evil.

The Drath are default Chaotic Good? That's sure a change from Altarian Prophecy. So much for being Pure Evil. I never thought them to be Evil, regardless...

Yeah, I haven't actually played Altarian Prophecy but I remember seing a screenshot where they were pure evil so I thought that they were going to be that here too.
But it makes sense to have the same number of good and evil races.

And "Dark Your" in my above post should of course be "Dark Yor"

the difference between chaotic and pure (evil or good) is only that pure is max good or evil while chaotic is a moderate evil or good?
