Download Folder Issue!!

OK, I downloaded it without any difficulty.

BUT, I DO NOT like the folder/location in which it was placed.
How do I move it (Say to another computer, or different location on this one)???

Chris.

Drag and Drop. Make sure you point the shortcut in your start menu to the new location of the data. Also if you penetrate the options of SDC you will find a section where you can tell it the destination folder you wish it to go to when it installs the game and what you want the shortcut in the start menu to be named. I cant remember the exact menu and sub menu to go to because I am at work and it sucks my brain out. This is all assuming you are running windows.

Tools --> Settings --> "Games" Tab --> "Installation Path", at the bottom.

So you are saying I just copy the GalCiv2 folder to anywhere I want (even another computer) and recreate a shortcut pointing to the location of the startup exe file? (If so, that would be great)

You'll definately want to change the location in SDC as well, just to be sure that it updates the game when patches come through and such.

Ah, no. Because the registry would not be corrected. The game won't run. Best bet would be delete and reinstall, changing the destination folder in the install screen. Any game puts entries in the Windows registry. Without these the game is not recognized by Windows. Unless of course this game doesn't do that. Which I would find hard to believe.

Well that just sucks, I dont want to have to download the whole game again just because it is in the wrong directory.

Is there another way?

There are utilities that can move folders and change the registry settings as well. There might even be freeware ones. But I'd be careful. Badly coded proggies like this can mess up your registry permanently, making your computer unable to boot at all.

Norton Utilities comes to mind, but it's rather expensive.

Hey, maybe Stardock makes something. Anybody know?

Maybe you can use SDC to archive all the elements you downloaded and then restore it to the folder you want.

I place no guarantees on this advice; but, I just did it and so far, no problems.

run "regedit", go under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Stardock/Drengin.net/GalCiv2", and change the "path" value.

Again, no guarantees offered on this. Do so at your own risk.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I just glanced at the default folder before I changed it... But is the default destination set to My Documents? Just curious. I hate when games do that.

I can see no problem with this, assuming that the path flag is the only one that is accessed by the game. But please, PLEASE back up your registry anytime you use regedit.

The default folder is not set to My Documents (though the save games go there under My Games\GalCiv2).

Per the above comments, Stardock Central has an option to prompt for the installation folder.

If you've already installed it, you don't have to set the option and redownload. As the bits above say, use Regedit.exe and adjust the Path value at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Drengin.net\GalCiv2 to point to the location you move to. If you're not comfortable with regedit, just try not to, I don't know, hit the Delete key?

Can this be changed after the fact? My C: drive is size limited. If the save game files are big, I'll be running out of room real fast.

If you're living right on the edge with your C drive space, you may wish to explore alternative options to "why must the galciv2 save games go under My Documents."

You can compress the directories. Or make a junction point to redirect them elsewhere. I don't know offhand that there's any way to alter the root for the saves. They are per-user based.

Arf, forum ate my reply here.

Anyhow, if you do a search for Microsoft's TweakUI powertoy, you can use that to change the location of MY Documents to another folder or antoher drive, if you so desire.

Hmmm..well here's what I did to move from drive c to drive e...1) Archive GC2 program, multimedia, etc seperately using SDC 2)when SDC asks you if you want to archive everything while doing main GC2 program choose "no" since that will archive the multimedia, etc with the main program and mess up updates, 3)after archiving is done, uninstall GC2. 4)change install directory setting in tools-->settings-->games 4)restore GC2 and all other parts of game. 5-10 minutes max on my slower machine.

BTW its a good idea to keep at least 1 archive version of each downloaded program, preferably on DVD-RW, in case your main copy goes bad or in the rare case when the latest update is messed up.

You can also right click on My DOcuments and change its location.  My documents folder is on my G drive.

Dang, I forgot about that. Thanks. Good call.

Alright, I moved the program and fixed the registry path.
Seems to work. I also activated the choice in SD Central to ask for an installation path. (Would REALLY be a good idea if this option started out as ON, not OFF). I am still irritated that I can't seem to move the program to another machine (changing a reg path, not a big deal. Not sure if I am ready to fabricate one on another computer). Not a big problem if my disks come on the 21 as expected (You ARE mailing them out so they arrive on the 21st, RIGHT?)

Anyway, thanks for the info on moving My Docs Folder. That was useful.
