European Release - NO Collectors Edition

Hi everyone,

I know a lot of europeans have been asking whether or not we also get the limited collector edition of this game. Unfortunately I pre-ordered from Play.com and have contacted paradox directly for details on what they are supplying people with.

My question to paradox was were they supplying play.com with the collectors edition i.e. cardboard box or a standard dvd case version.

This is their response;

Hi Jon,

The answer to your question is neither nor. The European Version of the game
comes in a Steelbook (=a metal case in DVD case size). There are no
different boxes to begin with at release, but depending on the how fast the
limited edition Steelbooks will sell out we will be reprinting the game in
normal DVD cases.

Now I'm not entirely sure what they mean by limited steel boxes? I assume if it is DVD case size its not the collectors edition, but then again, putting it in a steel box is something special.

Hmmmm any comments Stardock!? Could really do with a clear cut answer.

Damn shame. I mentioned it in another thread, is there anyway if we provide proof of pre-order etc, we could DL the extra stuff, and be able to get a printable version of the Tech Tree?

Would be great as im desperate to get the extra stuff.

Is it just me or are the Stardock people not being very forthcoming about the contents of various boxes? I don't spend a lot of time in these forums, but I see this question a lot and don't ever read an official "this is what's in the box you're going to get" answer.

From what I've put together it sounded like everyone who pre-ordered for a physical CD is getting the collector's edition with the tech tree, plus all of the pre-order bonus content to be downloaded from stardock. Those who pre-ordered direct download are just getting the game and the bonus content with the option for paying shipping and handling later on to buy a physical CD and the tech tree.

Stardock guys, if you're reading, this forum could really use an official sticky-thread for this question that tells people what they're going to recieve from various types of ordering. I know distribution is tough for an indie developer, but it seems like there's a lot of confusion as to who's getting what.

To be perfectly fair...

Stardock can't answer the question I am asking since I'm in the UK and the publishing and distribution here in Europe is being dealt by paradox, who have informed me that there is a DIFFERENT version of the game coming out here, this is most likely not the collectors edition but a bog standard copy which has a very fancy case.

I am getting pretty pissed off about this. I preordered to get the collectors edition with the extra content, but instead I have to settle for what is given to me, and when I ask questions like what am I getting I get a cryptic answer which I think doesn't even mean anything to paradox or stardock.

Fair enough that no one is going to be on top of the ball in terms of distribution but come on, at least have a clue about whos entitled to what. I ask specifically about the company I am buying from and the version of the game I am trying to buy and what it even looks like and I get an answer which Stardock doesn't even know anything about.

Seems to me like no one really knows anything, I even asked Game UK and it looks like that they are only getting the standard edition. Seems preordering anywhere in europe (UK) is a sheer waste of time.

Actually we have a solution we came up with today:

Every box of GalCiv has a serial #.  We know which serial #s went out in the first batch (the first run).  So we can let users come to galciv2.com, enter in the serial # and have it check against that first batch.  Then they'll get access to all the Collector's Edition goodies.

Great! I'm ordering from Amazon and they claim it isn't the Collector's Edition according to their product description and the email received from customer service. Still going to get it though from them. Worst case. I can live without a tech tree.

Guys I got some more info from Paradox:

Hi Björn,

In all European version of the game the unfoldable Techtree is included. Not
only in the preorders. Furthermore our version comes in a steelbook (metal
case) and all preorders receive a poster and the chance to win a miniature
spaceship.

The European Release has however no direct connection to Stardock and
therefore we can not procide a temporary serial number for DL. I will
however try to send the game a little bit before the release date in order
to compensate for shipping times.
