Question about Intel Gathering

I'm a recovered GalCiv I addict, and it appears I'm about to fall off the wagon later this month. I have a question for beta players.

If I can get wiped out by poorly choosing my offensive/defensive design strategy for starships, what's the best way to find out what the other guy is up to?

In GalCiv I, it didn't really matter much. The race was to get to Dreadnaught before, or at least about the same time, as the other top players. It seems to matter much more what the choices are in GalCiv II.

I used to use the trade screen in GalCiv I to see what techs the other players had, but that seemed to be sort of cheating. After all, if a potential enemy came around to trade trinkets for teacups I wouldn't provide a list of tech that I had to boot. Is the same 'cheat' available in Galciv II? If not, do we have to spy or engage other races in a fight to find out what they have?

I can't wait till my box comes!

The best way is to build a ship and chase around their ships. You'll be able to look at the basic combat stats of their ships/fleets. This will let you know if the Drengin are mounting Missiles, Drivers, or Beamers. It won't let you see their precise component listing without some espionage spending, but you will get to see that 2 of their Heavy Cruisers as a fleet have 10 Beam, 14 Armor and 30/30 hit points, for instance. If you want to know the precise components on an alien ship, you need to have a certain level of espionage.

The old GC1 exploit of their listed techs that they have you and don't is still there. However, this doesn't tell you what their ships are packing, so it nearly as useful as just flying one of your ships out to their region of space and taking a look.

Sounds very cool. You actually have to stage Intel missions... Cool!

Espionage, sensors can help, especially if you don't want to take a chance at setting of an intergalatic war

I am assuming that the game will allow spying on the minors.

If not I just wish they would take out the advice that I should increase my espionage to find out about them.

How does that work? When I observe an alien battle, I can see what weapons are being used and what defenses are in place but I have never seen anything that gives me a number on the weapons, armor or hit points with no espionage.

Have you tried to click on an AI ship?

Originally we had it wored out where you needed to put some money into espionage before that data became available, but in the end it just made the game less fun, so now, if you can see a ship, you can see what its stats are.
